NEW YORK.- Yvon Lambert New York is pleased to announce the gallerys second exhibition of work by Paris-based artist Mircea Cantor. A selection of new works will be installed at the West 21st Street gallery. The exhibition will be on view from September 6 through October 1, 2007. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. The opening reception with the artist will be held at the gallery on Thursday, September 6 from 6 to 8 pm.
The works featured in A Free Smile highlight the disintegration of borders, the successes and failings of globalization, and a world with a sky that is indeed variable to many. Cantor manipulates household items with elegant simplicity: a reworked front page of The New York Times becomes The New Times (2007). Sliced soda cans delineate a rose window in Rosette (2007), and candle smoke spells out Cielo Variable (2007) on a white gallery wall. In his With a Free Smile (YEAR), a terracotta coffin piggy bank rests on the floor of the rear gallery, where the viewer is encouraged to participate by dropping a coin into the slot. The exhibition also features the artists first 16mm film, Shadow for a while (2007) in the street side gallery, which consists of a two minute black and white projection of a burning flag.
