'Days of Being Wild' at The Lab 101 Gallery
Andy Kehoe / Kathleen Lolley / Evan B Harris.

CULVER CITY, CA.- The Lab 101 Gallery presents: 'Days of Being Wild' new paintings by Andy Kehoe, Kathleen Lolley, Evan B. Harris, on view August 25 - September 19, 2007. This exhibition features three talented artists who share a wonderful style of illustrative painting. Their storybook pictures express a pure childlike whimsical quality. Each of the artists depict a world filled with fantasy and folk tales that tell stories with slightly darker endings. Some of their characters bear an oddly humorous stance and humanistic resemblance while others appear to be embarking on mischievously sinister undertakings while set in sparse landscapes.

Andy Kehoe - Andy Kehoe currently lives and works in the city of champions Pittsburgh, PA. In 2003, he graduated from Parsons School of Design with a coveted BFA in Illustration. His work serves as an outlet to feelings of unrest and anxiety in this unstable world of ours using a motley crew of creatures and characters to embody these fear and hopes. Also important is the expression of sincere human emotion without the weight of sarcasm and irony which has become overabundant in art these days. Each piece is a snippet of a larger and ongoing cautionary tale. Andy has shown in a number of group shows around the country and as internationally as Canada and is represented by Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York. He has done illustration work for such clients as the New York Times, The Progressive, Metropolis, The Stranger, Fantagraphics and has been included in American Illustration 24.

Kathleen Lolley - Kathleen Lolley (born 1978 in Marshfield, Wisconsin) moved to Kentucky nine months after her birth. She spent her childhood split between Louisville, KY and Pittsburgh, PA. She attended California Institute of the Arts and received a BFA in experimental Animation. While at Calarts she experimented with hand-crafted stop motion puppets. This experience introduced her to the world of comics and sequential art. In addition to working on various commercial animations, including Nickelodeon’s Sponge Bob Squarepants and titles for the movie Willard, Kathleen has created a handful of short films. After spending six years in Los Angeles, she moved back to Kentucky to concentrate on painting and living a simple life. Storytelling still plays a prominent role in her work. Critters try to break the spell of day to day heartbreak. Rabbits flee from hunters, girls are lost in the woods. Giant elk stumble over towns clasping bottles, is it a remedy they hold or just a beer? Her work can be found in small shops and galleries across the U.S. Last year her work received international recognition by appearing in Elle & Japanese Vogue and appearing on the latest album cover of My Morning Jacket. Also she has been published in a few comic anthologies (Unicorn Mountain) Lolley currently resides in Kentucky where she spends her time making crafts, comics and fine art. http://www.lolleyland.com

Evan B Harris - Born among the briars and brambles in the backwoods of Medford, Oregon, Evan Benjamin Harris grew up with little knowledge of the bourgeois big city fine arts. So, he dove into the recesses of his own imagination and embraced the fables and folklore that fascinated him. With little to do but draw, he did exactly that. Now older, things haven’t changed much. The stories he created as a child are still present in his paintings. With diligence and hard work, Evan’s crude stick figures became the more clearly defined images you see today. With no formal art training, he creates on his own terms. Broken boards, oil and acrylic paints, charcoal pastels, plastic resin, and melted waxes are among the mediums Evan uses. Then they are beaten, brushed, sanded, polished, and hung. Most would cringe at the idea of scratching or sanding something they spent hours upon hours painting, but that’s Evan’s favorite part – creating the appearance that this wasn’t made in the 21st century, but perhaps in the 20th. So, behind every scratch and claw mark, there is a story to tell. http://www.evanbharris.com
