TAOS, NM.-The Harwood Museum of Art of the University of New Mexico presents a lecture Thursday August 16th at 7pm with UNM Professor of Visual Arts, Martin Facey. This talk will focus on Richard Diebenkorn’s legacy as a teacher. This program will be held at the Museum and is free to Harwood Alliance Members & UNM community or $8.
Martin Facey came to know Richard Diebenkorn as one of his students and then went on to become an informal apprentice to the artist. For his August 16th talk, Martin Facey will share anecdotes and a chronology creating a picture of Diebenkorn as a real human being and educator, as well as the professional but removed artist.
Facey explains: “My plan with this talk is to recount my time in the 60's, 70's and 80's studying with Richard Diebenkorn focusing on his legacy as a teacher... both in and out of the classroom. And because Diebenkorn is considered by many to be the west coast’s premier modernist painter I will also talk about LA's emergence as a world art center during this time.”
Martin Facey’s August 16th lecture on Richard Diebenkorn is part of the Harwood’s Summer exhibition “Diebenkorn in New Mexico” on view through September 9. Diebenkorn related programs continue August 24th with the Symposium featuring a day of noted Scholars discussing the artist, and August 30th with a Gallery Talk with co-curator Charles Strong. Also Every Wednesday at 1pm the Harwood Museum offers Docent Tours of the Diebenkorn Exhibition.
