LONDON.- Camden Arts Centre is delighted that Marta Marcé will be artist in residence during the summer. The starting point for her abstract paintings is structure and order. In manipulating basic systems and creating rules and games of her own, Marcé introduces playfulness in the face of constraints.

Her interest in formula and order is shared with exhibiting artist Mary Martin and her sense of energy and movement is reminiscent of Kenneth Martin’s work. For her residency she will create new work inspired by representation in the urban environment. She will also be organising interactive works, taking part in open studio days, a panel discussion and a Concrete music event.

Marcé believes that games act as a model for the real world - they provide a structure for activity with an uncertain but manipulable outcome. Her approach is to establish unique frameworks for taking risks and experimenting with form, colour and surface materials.

“I seek to create a space for experimentation and play within this discipline. I want the paintings to have an immense energy, at once vibrant and full of humanity.” Marta Marcé

For her last series of paintings, Mikado, she explored the dual forces of order and chaos as manifested in the ancient stick game of Mikado, in which players throw sticks in order to read their destiny. In Mikado she could see a perfect demonstration of the fundamental balance of binary forces and the complex states of life we are continually engaged in.
