Buckingham Palace To Display 50 Years Of State Gifts

LONDON.- Starting tomorrow, visitors to Buckingham Palace will be able to explore 50 years of royal state gifts, in the splendor of the Ball Supper Room, built by Queen Victoria. One of the centerpieces on display is a gigantic desk, with matching desk set, throne sized chair and firescreen, all inlaid with millions of tiny pieces of ivory and sandalwood. The whole set was a present from the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, in 1961. Another incredible piece is a solid silver samovar (urn for boiling water for tea), given by Boris Yeltsin. There is also the gold oasis, given by the Emir of Qatar in 1998, complete with gold palm trees bending over pools of malachite water, gold camels, gold and silver tents, gold Bedouin lounging on golden carpets around a gemstone campfire. Other extraordinary gifts include a piece of the Berlin Wall given by the people of Germany in 1989, an antique bronze cannon from the Sultan of Brunei in 1972 and a ceramic world cup football from South Korea, 2002. Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of Britain’s sovereigns since 1837. It evolved from a town house that was owned from the beginning of the eighteenth century by the Dukes of Buckingham. Today it is The Queen’s official residence. Although in use for the many official events and receptions held by The Queen, areas of Buckingham Palace are opened to visitors on a regular basis. The State Rooms of the Palace are open to visitors during the Annual Summer Opening in August and September. This exhibition will remain on view until September 29.
