DOYLESTOWN, PA.-Abstract and semi-abstract stone sculptures by Roger Loos are on exhibit from July 14 through October 21, 2007 as part of the Outdoor Sculpture Program at the James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown. The outdoor display, located between the museum and the Bucks County Library Center , is part of an ongoing program that highlights the work of contemporary American sculptors. The Outdoor Sculpture Program is sponsored by Fulton Bank, Premier Division.
These outdoor sculpture shows have been part of our exhibit program since 1994, and allow us to present the work of sculptors from around the country to the Bucks County audience, explains Senior Curator Brian H. Peterson. Weve been able to show the entire range of genres and styles practiced by contemporary sculptors, from figurative to abstract, kinetic to conceptual.
Roger Loos uses the ancient art of stone carving to create abstract and semi-abstract works out of marble, granite and limestone quarried from Pennsylvania , Vermont and Indiana .
The stone selection usually comes before the idea and is the inspiration for an idea says Loos. Stone carving requires tremendous patience and persistence. It is the beginning of a long relationship.
Loos first began to create sculpture in the mid-1990s while serving as a docent at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton , New Jersey . He received his training at Muhlenberg College , Allentown , Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia . His works have been shown extensively in the Bucks County area, at such venues as Phillips Mill, New Hope , PA and Bucks County Community College .
This exhibit is made possible through annual support provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Bucks County Commissioners, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
