Concrete Works at Mitchell-Innes & Nash |
Walead Beshty, Six Sided Picture 003, 2007.
NEW YORK.- Mitchell-Innes & Nash will present Concrete Works, a summer group show of eight artists in its Chelsea space, on view from June 2 – July 27, 2007. Concrete Works includes photography, painting and sculpture from the early 20th century to the present. The exhibition explores the tension between formalist abstraction and materialism, and between aesthetics and process.
Artists in the exhibition are Walead Beshty, Daniel Lefcourt, Lucy McKenzie, László Moholy-Nagy, Albert Oehlen, Man Ray, Jessica Stockholder, and James Welling. Although the works on view employ diverse artistic approaches, they all utilize the strategies of high modernism. These works float between the literal and the metaphoric as they call attention to their materials and their means of production.
The exhibition will include new large-format color photographs by Beshty, a new wall sculpture by Lefcourt, a large charcoal drawing by McKenzie, color photographs by Moholy-Nagy, a black and white painting by Oehlen, two automatic paintings by Man Ray, two sculptures by Stockholder, and new photographs from Welling’s Quadrilaterals series.
