Four Mistakes That Can Make an Affiliate Offer Look Better Than It Is

A spreadsheet can make an affiliate offer look profitable, only for it to fall short when the campaign begins. The issue usually lies in an unverified assumption — for example, that every depositor will qualify, that last month's revenue will repeat, or that a higher rate will automatically improve margins. Before you approve the next offer, refer to this breakdown of affiliate payout models to identify which assumptions deserve a closer look.

The CPA, RevShare, and hybrid arrangements reward performance in different ways. When assessing these options one has to consider what might affect your expected earnings and whether your business will be able to cope with that change.

Mistake One: Counting Every Deposit as Commission

It is not always the case that a first deposit leads to a CPA payment, since the programmes might impose further qualification criteria and your forecast must therefore take into account the actual conditions you agreed to.

Suppose two offers have different rates; the higher rate may come with requirements that fewer of the players you refer can meet. If you factor in approval rates, the lower headline figure could generate more commission from the same number of depositors.
Ask for the full qualification criteria before you start sending traffic; calculate expected earnings based on approved acquisitions, and make sure rejected ones stay visible in your reports, asking for explanations when patterns appear.

Mistake Two: Treating One Strong Month as a Forecast

RevShare earnings are based on the revenue generated by referred players. This revenue can vary, so you can't rely on one strong month to justify future spending.
Check various reporting periods to see whether a small number of players heavily influence earnings; a group that maintains consistent activity across multiple accounts differs significantly from one dominated by a single exceptionally active player.

Prepare conservative, realistic and optimistic scenarios based on the data at your disposal. However, if the campaign turns out to only be successful under the optimistic scenario, then you should review the amount of budget that you have committed.

Mistake Three: Assuming Hybrid Automatically Reduces Risk

A hybrid involves a payment at acquisition and a portion of future revenue. Its value depends on the terms of both parts.

An reduced CPA payment would be able to cover only a small part of the acquisition costs, while the revenue share might take a while to make a significant contribution. As a result, together, the two elements could create a longer funding gap than the term hybrid implies.

Work out the amount of commission that reaches the company at each stage and determine when it becomes payable. Then compare this timetable with the campaign expenses. This will indicate whether the arrangement supports your operating budget as player revenue grows.

Mistake Four: Leaving Exceptions Until Something Goes Wrong

Commercial talks usually centre on rates and thus fail to deal with practical questions such as what takes place if tracking fails, how disputed conversions are examined, and what conditions might change and how one would be informed.

Before you launch, ask those questions and keep written records of the terms that have been agreed, of the approved traffic sources and of any campaign restrictions. Make sure the person responsible for payment issues knows what information is required to investigate them.

Clear answers make everyday decisions easier and give both parties a common reference point when the reports differ.

Approve the Assumptions Along With the Offer

Before you launch, make a note of the figures that underlie your decision — namely, the acquisition cost, the expected qualification rate, the revenue assumptions and the timing of payments. Establish a review point when you have collected enough data to evaluate those expectations.

If the results are different, work out which assumption has changed before you replace the offer or increase your spending. In some cases, the audience needs more attention; in others, the commercial terms need a different discussion.

A payout model that is useful gains its position by making it possible to explain, repeat and use the results for planning the next campaign.
