de Young and Legion of Honor Announce A Dozen Exhibitions to Open in 2027
Both the de Young and Legion of Honor will be home to major exhibitions that examine cultural and artistic movements born in the Bay Area.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco announce a full schedule of exhibitions, which will be on view for local audiences and visitors to San Francisco in 2027. Both the de Young and Legion of Honor will be home to major exhibitions that examine cultural and artistic movements born in the Bay Area. Newly announced, original shows on French artists will delight, including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec at the de Young museum and Simon Vouet at the Legion of Honor. Contemporary artists will be on view throughout the year at both museums, including a fourth rotation of works by local artists mostly drawn from the Svane Family Foundation gift, along with the first major exhibition on the US West Coast dedicated to British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare.

Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums said “I am particularly excited about the range of artistic traditions and expressions that our audiences will encounter in the de Young and Legion of Honor’s galleries this year. With exhibitions representing seven of the museums’ curatorial departments, the 2027 season exemplifies our commitment to connecting audiences with the art and ideas of the past and present.”

At the de Young museum, located in Golden Gate Park, the year begins with a presentation of watercolors by American artist Andrew Wyeth, many on view to the public for the first time. This will be followed by Made in San Francisco, which celebrates how the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA, later the San Francisco Art Institute, or SFAI) became a launching pad for new art styles in the post-World War II period. Focused exhibitions on Oceanic art from New Ireland, and of California Native Art will also be on view. Work by contemporary artists will go up throughout the year, including graphic work by Charles Gaines, and the fourth rotation of works by Bay Area artists drawn from the 2022 Svane gift. The year closes with the premiere of Toulouse-Lautrec: Obsessions—a fresh take on the extraordinary artist that will explore the complex factors defining his short life.

At the Legion of Honor, situated in Lincoln Park, the year of exhibitions begins with a selection of works drawn from a transformative gift by Kirk Edward Long. This will be followed by a celebratory exhibition on the Summer of Love, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the cultural phenomenon. In addition, Yinka Shonibare’s work will land in the galleries of the Legion of Honor. The year will be completed with Simon Vouet: Painting and Power, which examines a forgotten figure of 17th-century French art.
