PERTH.- This December internationally celebrated WA artist Pip & Pop transforms AGWA into a dazzling parallel universe of colour, sugar and wonder.
AGWA presents Double Magic, an immersive exhibition by renowned Perth artist Tanya Schulz, working as Pip & Pop. Bursting with playful imagination, the exhibition invites visitors into a fantastical dream world where curiosity is rewarded and the unexpected awaits at every turn.
Part enchanted forest, part candy kingdom and part psychedelic daydream, the exhibition invites visitors of all ages to step away from reality and enter a mini universe where creatures, sparkling landscapes and impossible abundance collide.
At the centre of this extraordinary world is a fantastical cat shaped cave.
Visitors might look inside, marvel at its magical splendour and bask amongst a landscape bursting with colour, hidden details and fantastical forms. Along the way, they'll discover tiny treasures, strange creatures and handcrafted elements so intricate they seem almost impossible.
Some are even made from real sugar.
Double Magic draws on stories of fictional geographies, edible fantasy lands and caves that lead to other worlds. Im interested in paradise mythologies where everything is abundant and enticing, inanimate objects might come to life; places where we can escape our earthly realities, said Tanya Schultz.
For me, its about optimism and wish-fulfilment and our very human desire to imagine somewhere better, while leaving open the possibility that things aren't always quite what they seem, said the artist.
Known around the globe for her exuberant installations, Pip & Pop, transforms everyday materials including candy, modelling clay, pigments, beads, crystals, artificial flowers and craft materials into immersive environments that blur the line between fantasy and reality.
The exhibition follows a remarkable period of international success for the Perth-born artist, whose work has appeared at London's Kew Gardens, Japan's Aichi Triennale, the Sharjah Museum of Art, Taiwan's Kuandu Biennale and galleries and museums across Asia, Europe, North America and the Middle East.
Drawing inspiration from folk tales, paradise myths and imaginary worlds, Pip & Pop creates places that feel joyfully excessive, wonderfully strange and utterly irresistible.
AGWA Director Colin Walker said the exhibition promises to be one of the most visually spectacular and family-friendly experiences ever presented at the Gallery.
"Pip & Pop has an extraordinary ability to create worlds that spark delight, curiosity and a genuine sense of wonder. This isn't an exhibition visitors simply look at. It's an exhibition they step inside. Wherever you turn there is something surprising to discover."
Double Magic opens at AGWA 18 December 2026 and runs until 9 May 2027.
Pip & Pop Pip & Pop (Australian artist Tanya Schultz & her team) create immersive and colour-saturated installations from an eclectic array of materials including sugar, candy, pigments, modeling clay, artificial flora, crystals, beads, rhinestones, and everyday craft materials. Pip & Pop also create wall-works, videos and 2D works that are similarly excessive, colourful and joyfully optimistic.
Through their obsessively detailed and colour-saturated artworks, they playfully transform everyday materials into psychedelic dreamscapes. Their work draws inspiration from fictional geographies and paradise mythologies, described in folktales, literature and cinema. They are fascinated with imagined utopias, magical places of abundance and immortality; mythical places that may or may not exist, that are found by chance, and that are impossible to locate again.
