Loud Bang in Garage? Signs of a Broken Garage Door

A loud bang from the garage is rarely harmless. It can mean a torsion spring has broken, a lift cable has snapped, a roller has come out of the track or a panel has shifted. Knowing what the sound means helps you decide how urgent the repair is, and it helps you stay safe while you wait for a technician.

A sharp bang with the door sagging

This is the classic sign of a broken torsion spring. The spring holds most of the door’s weight, and when it breaks, the door can feel suddenly heavy, sag on one side or refuse to lift. You may also see a visible gap in the spring coil. Do not try to replace the spring yourself. Springs store a great deal of force, and a mistake during replacement can cause severe injury.

A bang followed by uneven movement

One side of the door may fail while the other still works. In that case the door can tilt or bind in the track as it moves. You may hear a grinding or scraping sound as well. Stop using the opener and keep people and vehicles away from the door until a technician has checked the balance.

A bang with a visible gap at the top

A snapped lift cable often shows up as a gap at the top section and a door that hangs at an angle. Cables are under tension, so when one breaks it can release a snap. Look at the top corners of the door from a safe position. If one side is noticeably lower than the other, the cable is the likely cause.

A bang when the opener starts

Sometimes the opener’s gear, belt or chain slips and releases with a snap. The sound can be sharp and surprising, and it may be followed by the door moving only partway. Check that the opener is secured to the ceiling and that the header bracket is firm. A loose mounting bracket can produce a banging noise and make the opener less reliable over time.

A bang at the end of travel

A bang when the door reaches the top or bottom of its travel usually points to incorrect limit settings or a worn stop. The door may be hitting the floor or the header too hard. Adjusting the opener’s limits is generally a simple task covered in the manual, but if the noise continues after adjustment, have the springs and track inspected.

What to do right away

Keep the door closed if possible, and do not walk under a door that is hanging or sagging. Disengage the opener if the door is crooked or hanging unevenly. Keep children, pets and vehicles clear of the opening. Take photos of the door, the spring and any visible damage so the technician knows what to expect. Schedule a service call as soon as possible, because a door in this condition can fail completely without warning.

What not to do

Do not attempt to re-tension a spring or remove a broken cable yourself. Do not force the door open or closed when it is hanging crooked. Do not run the opener repeatedly, because that can strain the motor and damage other components. Avoid tying or taping a broken cable back into place, since that only hides a dangerous fault.

Why a quick repair saves money

Provo homeowners often find that a spring or cable replacement costs less than the damage a fallen door can cause. A door that drops can crack a vehicle’s roof, damage an interior wall or injure someone standing in the opening. Addressing the bang early keeps the repair focused on the part that failed rather than the cascade of damage that follows a complete failure.

What a technician does

A trained technician releases the spring tension safely, replaces the broken spring or cable, checks the drum and track alignment, and tests the balance. They also inspect the rollers, hinges and opener, and they confirm the safety reverse is working before the door is returned to service. Many repairs can be completed in one visit, and the technician can explain what was done and what to watch for afterward.

If you are in the Provo area, you can request a service visit through our garage door service in Provo, ME page. A loud bang deserves prompt attention, and an experienced crew can diagnose the problem quickly and recommend the right repair.

Keep the door in good shape

Regular inspections catch springs and cables before they fail. Look at the springs for gaps in the coil, check the cables for fraying, and listen for new sounds during normal operation. A well-maintained door is quieter, safer and far less likely to surprise you with a loud bang on a quiet morning.
