Americans Support Tate With Donation of Six Works



NEW YORK CITY.- At a fundraising dinner in New York tonight, hosted by the American Patrons of Tate, Nicholas Serota Tate’s Director, announced that a group of major works by leading American artists had been donated to Tate:

John Currin The Cuddler 2000 - promised gift of Frances Bowes
Ellen Gallagher Bird in Hand 2006 - promised gift of an anonymous collector
Ellsworth Kelly Red White 1966 - promised gift of Douglas S Cramer
Susan Rothenberg United States 1975 - promised gift of Judge Mariana Pfaelzer
Richard Tuttle 8th Paper Octagonal 1970 – promised gift of Angela Westwater and David Meitus
Terry Winters Scale 2003 - promised gift of Donald and Catie Marron

He also announced that $1.5 million had been raised towards the acquisition of works by contemporary artists from North and South America for Tate’s Collection.

The aim of the evening was to celebrate senior artists from North and South America. Artists who attended included:

Vija Celmins, Chuck Close, John Currin and Rachel Feinstein, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Ellen Gallagher, Alfredo Jaar, Alex Katz, Ellsworth Kelly, Jeff Koons, Guillermo Kuitca, Julio Le Parc, Robert Mangold and Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Brice and Helen Marden, Paul McCarthy, Cildo Meireles, Malcolm Morley, Vik Muniz, Bruce Nauman, Susan Rothenberg, Ernesto Neto, Gabriel Orozco, Liliana Porter, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Robert Ryman and Merrill Wagner Ryman, Doris Salcedo, Joel Shapiro and Ellen Phelan, Cindy Sherman, Frank Stella, Fred Tomaselli, Richard Tuttle, Bill Viola and Kira Perov, Kara Walker, Jeff Wall, Lawrence Weiner and Terry Winters

The American Patrons of Tate is an independent charity based in New York to
raise support for Tate from individuals, foundations, and corporations in the US. Since 1989, the charity has raised $81 million in cash donations and given $39 million in gifts of art by private collectors or acquired through endowment income.

Due to the generosity Ella Fontanals-Cisneros and the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, The New York Community Trust: Lynn Forester de Rothschild Fund and The Manton Foundation all table proceeds from the Artists Dinner will be used for art acquisitions from the Americas.
