CHICAGO, IL.- The Art Institute of Chicago announced Body and Being in African Art, on view November 2, 2026March 1, 2028. This Arts of Africa collection rotation brings together 53 objects ranging from masks and headdresses to jewelry and instruments from across the African continent. These objects11 of which have never been exhibited at the Art Institute beforeexplore the cultural significance of the body as the center of artistic creation in African art.
Many African cultures share the belief that the body and its outer appearance is a reflection of an individuals inner beingtheir character, health, and social belonging. This presentation features objects produced and used by a variety of African cultures in the 19th and 20th century that mark important moments for both the individual and community such as birth, death, transitions from childhood to adulthood, and communication with the otherworld.
The works that are on display in this rotation are not only meant to be looked at, but lived with as well. They are associated with every aspect of life, and showcase the variety of cultures that exist on the continent that share similar beliefs but express them in disparate ways, said Constantine Petridis, Rita Knox Chair and Curator, Arts of Africa. We hope visitors learn more about the cultures and communities that created these objects in honor of the body and feel the direct relationship between their bodies and the objects on display.
Body and Being in African Art is curated by Constantine Petridis, Rita Knox Chair and Curator, Arts of Africa.
