Zander Galerie announces representation of Mexican artist duo Lake Verea

COLOGNE.- Zander Galerie announced the representation of Mexican artist duo Lake Verea, Francisca Rivero-Lake Cortina (b. 1973) and Carla Verea Hernández (b. 1978), both born in Mexico City.

The announcement follows their first exhibition in the Cologne gallery, presented this summer, marking the beginning of a new collaboration and an ongoing commitment to the duo’s distinctive photographic practice.

For more than two decades, Lake Verea has approached some of the most celebrated examples of twentieth-century architecture from an unexpected perspective: at daylight and nightlight, illuminated by the full moon and transformed through playful interventions. Working across analogue and digital cameras and a range of photographic formats, the queer artist duo explores architecture not simply as structure, but as a site of atmosphere, memory, intimacy, and lived experience.

In their acclaimed DarkRooms series, Lake Verea employs long exposures and what they describe as “slow photography” to engage with the idea of “Deep Time,” searching for moments of “intimacy and sexiness.” Through extended periods of observation and exposure, their images reveal atmospheres and spatial experiences that remain invisible during the day. Light, shadow, duration, and darkness become active elements, shifting attention away from architectural form and towards the subtle sensations embedded within these spaces.

Lake Verea’s work is held in prominent public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, New York; Palm Springs Art Museum; Museo Amparo, Puebla; Museo Tamayo and Colección Jumex, Mexico City; and the Barragan Foundation, Basel.

Their work has been the subject of numerous international exhibitions, including major solo exhibitions a Palm Springs Art Museum; Fundación Casa de México, Madrid; Museo Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City; Museo Amparo, Puebla; and Yale School of Architecture Gallery, New Haven. Their work has also been featured in exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and at the Mexican Pavilion of the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale.

With this representation, Zander Galerie looks forward to further developing its dialogue with Lake Verea and bringing their singular exploration of architecture, photography, light, and time to new audiences.
