NEW YORK, NY.- Mickey Cartin is a collector of intensity, intelligence, range, and taste, an early practitioner of today's style of cross-category collecting. Mr. Cartin began acquiring works of art four decades ago, bringing together extensive holdings of contemporary art and design, Outsider Art, Old Master paintings, drawings, and prints, 19th century Northern European and Scandinavian paintings, as well as early printed books and manuscripts. Now, a considered selection of objects from this legendary collection comes to more than 10 sales through July of 2027 in Christie's New York, London and Paris as An Alchemy of Ideas: Works from the Mickey Cartin Collection. Christie's will offer the first Cartin pieces on 18 November 2026 in the New York Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale followed by the New York Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale on 20 November 2026, including works by Giorgio de Chirico, Walton Ford, Alfred Jensen, and Roman Opałka.
The launch of the collection in New York celebrates Mr. Cartin's influence on the New York art world during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Over the years he became a great friend and patron to seminal artists including Sol LeWitt, Walton Ford, Charles LeDray and Spencer Finch, and you could find them in his home mixing with dealers, writers, journalists and scholars. The Mickey Cartin provenance means thoughtfulness, openness, discovery, and choices that were considered, says the art advisor Hugo Nathan, who has known Mr. Cartin for decades. It means that this is a piece, this is an artist, this is an era that Mickey thought deserved to be remembered. If Mickey liked something that means we should all be paying attention.
