COPENHAGEN.- SMK Thy has just completed its first full season. A total of 68,038 people visited the new museum over the course of the year.
On Sunday 18 October, SMK Thy welcomed its final visitors of the year before the museum in the small village of Doverodde closed at the end of its first full season.
The season began on 28 March, and over the course of just under seven months, 68,038 people visited SMK Thy, which is part of SMK National Gallery of Denmark. This brings the total number of visitors to 106,968 since the museum first opened its doors on 29 August 2025.
This year, visitors could enjoy the critically acclaimed exhibition Living Landscapes, which drew on SMKs extensive art collection to explore the relationship between humanity and nature. In the former grain silo, they could also experience Seed Savers, featuring brand-new contemporary artworks created specifically for the buildings distinctive spaces.
Throughout the year, the museum also offered introductory talks, guided tours, educational programmes, an SMK Fridays event and creative activities in its workshop.
SMK Director Astrid la Cour is delighted with the museums first full season: This is the first year weve been open from Easter through to mid-October, and it has been wonderful to see visitors flooding in from start to finish. Weve welcomed people from all over Denmark and from abroad too and their enthusiasm has confirmed that our idea of staging exhibitions in Thy featuring works from SMKs extensive collection resonates with a great many people. We have ended the season on a real high, feeling very good about the response, and were already looking forward to opening our doors again in the spring, she says.
SMK Thy is closed for the winter and will reopen on 20 March 2027. Visitors can look forward to two entirely new exhibitions featuring works from SMKs extensive collection as well as new contemporary art.
SMK Thy is part of SMK National Gallery of Denmark. The museum is situated in the small village of Doverodde in South Thy and opened in August 2025. Its reconstructed repository, designed by the Norwegian-Danish architectural practice Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter, houses works from SMKs extensive art collection, while a former grain silo presents all-new contemporary art.
