HARLEM, NY.- The Studio Museum in Harlem today announced that Turiya Adkins, Timothy Yanick Hunter, and Clifford Prince King have been selected as the 2026–27 participants in the Museum's acclaimed Artist-in-Residence program. They join a creative community that has grown over the past half-century to over 150 alumni, including some of the most celebrated artists working today. From November 2026 through October 2027, Adkins, Hunter, and King will receive institutional and material support; individualized studio space and a dedicated lounge in the Museum’s purpose-built home; ongoing interaction with members of the Studio Museum community, including curators and Studio Museum Institute and Expanding the Walls participants; professional development guidance; a culminating exhibition in one of the Museum’s galleries; and an exhibition publication.

Thelma Golden, Ford Foundation Director and Chief Curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem, said, “Our Artist-in-Residence program has served as the essence of this institution’s mission since our founding. It embodies our commitment to ensuring early-career artists of African descent are supported and nourished, and exemplifies our work to bring artists together with the Harlem community. I am thrilled that this cohort’s three outstanding artists, Turiya Adkins, Timothy Yanick Hunter, and Clifford Prince King, will be with us during this year.”

Adria Gunter, Assistant Curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem, said, “I so look forward to welcoming Turiya Adkins, Timothy Yanick Hunter, and Clifford Prince King as the 2026-27 Artist-in-Residence cohort. I am excited for these artists to expand their incredibly dynamic practices, which consider Black worldmaking, diasporic memory, personhood, and beyond, throughout their time together in this program.”

The culminating exhibition for the 2026 cohort, Derriann Pharr, Simonette Quamina, and Taylor Simmons, who were the first artists in residence to exhibit their work made during the residency in the institution’s new purpose-built home, is now on view through January 3, 2027. A sustained becoming: Studio Museum Artists in Residence 2026 showcases each artist’s distinct approach to figuration as they engage with cultural memory, bodily presence, storytelling, and archival materials.

Turiya Adkins (b. 1998, New York City) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn. Through drawing, painting, and printmaking, she constructs visual worlds that investigate mythology within Black worldmaking, with her abstract compositions serving as sites where ancestral memory and imagined futures converge. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including a solo exhibition, More Than a Notion, at Hannah Traore Gallery, New York. Group exhibitions include Helmut Lang Seen by Antwaun Sargent, also at Hannah Traore Galery, New York; Manifold Deluxe at Frieze Cork Street, London; and Fade at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Adkins received her BA from Dartmouth College in 2020.

Timothy Yanick Hunter (b. 1990, Toronto, Canada) lives and works in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He uses research, recording, and sampling methodologies to explore the experiential and aesthetic dimensions of the Black diaspora. References that range from historical photographs from museum archives to ephemera from obscure corners of the Internet are overlaid with music and spoken recordings, expressing Hunter’s interest in alternative modes of making and thinking about memory, reproduction, temporality, and the unknowable. Hunter has been an artist in residence at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art, Portland, OR; and Black Rock Senegal, Dakar. He was included in the 2022 Toronto Biennial of Art and longlisted for the 2024 Sobey Art Award. He has exhibited nationally and internationally at Cooper Cole, Gallery 44, and A Space Gallery, all Toronto; Oakville Galleries, Oakville, Canada; Centre Clark, Montreal; Metro 54, Amsterdam; ILY2, Portland, OR; Kendra Jayne Patrick, Bern, Switzerland; and PADA Studios, Barreiro, Portugal; Third Born, Mexico City; among others. His work is in the permanent collections of the Studio Museum in Harlem and the National Gallery of Canada. Hunter received his BA from the University of Toronto.

Clifford Prince King (b. 1993, Tucson, AZ) is a photographer and filmmaker based in Brooklyn. His images depict carefully composed interiors and landscapes shaped by natural light, personal objects, and moments of vulnerability, emphasizing the social and historical realities of race, sexuality, and desire. In 2023 he presented his first solo institutional exhibition at the Carolyn Campagna Kleefeld Contemporary Art Museum in Long Beach, CA. His second solo museum exhibition will open at MoCA Tucson in Arizona in October. Previously, King was commissioned by Public Art Fund to produce a series of photographs that were displayed on bus shelters and newsstands across New York, Chicago, and Boston in 2023. In 2025 he was a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow in the category of photography. He has also participated in group exhibitions and spoken about his practice at Brown University, Princeton University, Yale University, the International Center of Photography, the Leslie-Lohman Museum, and MASS MoCA. His work is in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, among others.
