Backlink Metrics to Collect for Competitor Research in the Arts

For galleries, museums, art publications and independent artists, online visibility can shape who discovers an exhibition, reads an essay or commissions a project. Search rankings are influenced by many factors, but links from other websites can help signal that a page is useful and worth citing. Knowing which backlink metrics to collect for competitor research gives arts organizations a clearer view of how peers earn that attention—and where there may be room to build a distinct presence.

Start with comparable competitors

A useful comparison begins with websites that share an audience or purpose, not simply the largest cultural institutions in the field. A small photography journal may learn more from another independent publication than from a global museum with a far bigger marketing team. Choose a manageable group of peers: perhaps a few local galleries, specialist magazines, artist-led platforms or creative businesses with similar audiences.

Compare pages as well as whole domains. A competitor’s exhibition announcement, artist interview or practical guide may attract links for reasons that are not obvious from its homepage. Looking at individual pages can reveal which subjects, formats and partnerships resonate beyond the site itself.

Metrics that explain more than volume

The number of backlinks is an easy starting point, but it is a blunt measure. One widely copied directory listing may produce many links without bringing relevant readers. A handful of thoughtful mentions from respected art schools, local media or curators may be more meaningful. Collect several measures together and interpret them in context.

● Referring domains: Count the distinct websites linking to a competitor. This helps distinguish broad interest from repeated links on a single site.

● Relevance: Note whether linking pages relate to art, culture, design, education, a local community or another audience the organization wants to reach.

● Authority and quality: Use a consistent SEO tool’s authority indicators as estimates, not as measures of editorial merit. Review the actual page and its publisher before drawing conclusions.

● Link placement and context: Record whether a link appears in an article, resource list, event calendar, interview or image credit. Context often explains why the citation exists.

● Follow attributes: Note whether links are marked as sponsored, nofollow or otherwise qualified. These attributes describe how a link is treated; they do not make a genuine mention worthless.

● Destination pages and anchor wording: Identify which pages receive links and how they are described. This can show whether people cite a particular exhibition, artist biography, research resource or service.

● Freshness: Track when links appear and whether they continue to point to a live, relevant page. A burst around a festival or opening may indicate a seasonal opportunity.

For a closer walkthrough of how to locate and assess these opportunities, see this competitor backlink analysis guide. The useful outcome is not a list to copy blindly; it is evidence about the relationships and material that make a site worth referencing.

Turn observations into an ethical plan

For each promising link, ask what prompted it. Was the site included in a local arts guide? Did a reporter cite an artist’s research? Did an institution publish a downloadable resource that teachers use? These clues can suggest actions suited to your own work: offer accurate information to a relevant directory, develop a helpful resource, invite an informed interview or share an event with a publication that covers the subject.

Do not imitate another organization’s relationships or reproduce its content. A competitor’s backlink profile is a source of hypotheses, not a script. Contact publishers only when there is a real editorial reason to do so, and make any collaboration or paid placement transparent. Avoid bulk schemes that promise links without regard to audience or context; low-quality links can waste resources and undermine trust.

Build the capacity to earn attention

Link earning often depends on having strong material to point to. In the arts, that might be a well-documented exhibition page, an accessible artist interview, a clear image-use policy, a thoughtful essay or a practical guide for visitors. Useful pages should be easy to navigate and maintain, with accurate dates, credits and contact information. If a page changes, redirect or update it so that citations do not lead readers to a dead end.

Visual work also requires planning. A gallery might commission portraits, installation views or documentation for an online feature, and the budget depends on the assignment, usage and delivery needs. Before setting a content budget, compare what affects the photographer cost per hour as well as project-based pricing. Osdire’s pricing overview is one place to see how rates vary by shoot type and what a quote may include.

Review progress, not just rankings

Keep a simple spreadsheet with the competitor, linking domain, destination page, topic, link context, date found and a note about possible relevance. Revisit it periodically rather than checking every day. Also measure outcomes you can act on: new relevant referring domains, visits from those sites, inquiries, event attendance or subscriptions. Search visibility is only one part of an arts organization’s reach.

Competitor research is most valuable when it clarifies what audiences and publishers already find useful. By weighing relevance, context and the page being cited—not just totals—arts organizations can make better decisions about content, collaborations and outreach, while building a reputation that reflects their own work.
