FRANKFURT.- The Städel Museum has launched an ambitious fundraising campaign aimed at securing its financial independence for future generations, inviting the public to contribute to an endowment fund with a long-term target of at least €100 million.

Announced on October 21, the initiative marks what the museum describes as the first comprehensive endowment campaign undertaken by a German art museum. Under the slogan "Städel remains Städel," the institution is asking visitors, supporters, and the wider Frankfurt community to help strengthen the financial foundations of a museum whose history has been closely tied to private philanthropy for more than two centuries.

Unlike conventional fundraising campaigns that collect donations for immediate expenses or specific projects, the Städel Endowment is designed to preserve its capital permanently. Contributions become part of the legally protected assets of the nonprofit Städelsches Kunstinstitut, while income generated by the fund will be used to support the museum's essential activities, including exhibitions, collection care, research, and education.

The approach reflects the original vision of Johann Friedrich Städel, the Frankfurt banker and art collector whose bequest established the museum in 1815. His ambition was to create an independent institution that would preserve works of art and make them accessible to the public without depending entirely on government support.

More than 200 years later, that principle remains central to the museum's identity.

"The Städel Endowment is our major project for the future," said Philipp Demandt, Director of the Städel Museum. "More than 200 years ago, Johann Friedrich Städel, our museum's founder, laid the foundation stone for a unique, independent museum with his legacy, sustained by civic engagement."

Demandt emphasized that the campaign is intended to extend that tradition of public participation, ensuring that the institution can maintain its independence as financial pressures facing cultural organizations continue to evolve.

"Everyone is invited to contribute to the Endowment and help usher in a new era for the Städel Museum," he added.

The museum enters the campaign with an unusually high degree of financial autonomy. According to the institution, approximately 85 percent of its operating budget is already financed through its own resources, placing it among the most self-financing museums in Europe.

Admissions revenue, individual donations, private patrons, foundations, companies, and the Städelscher Museums-Verein, the museum's longstanding friends' association, form the backbone of this support. Additional funding comes from the City of Frankfurt and the State of Hesse.

The new endowment is intended to reinforce this model by creating a lasting source of investment income that can provide greater stability beyond the fluctuations of annual donations and visitor revenue.

An important partner in the campaign is the Städelscher Museums-Verein, whose membership exceeds 10,000 people. The association has established a dedicated named fund through which members can make contributions directly to the museum's endowment.

"The Städel Museum is very close to the hearts of our more than 10,000 members," said Sylvia von Metzler, Chair of the association's board. "As a key supporter of the museum, we are delighted to actively endorse the Städel in this forward-looking endeavour."

Von Metzler said the association hopes its involvement will encourage individuals to consider their support not simply as a donation, but as a lasting contribution to the museum's history.

"Together with the museum, we are calling on people to contribute to the Städel Endowment to secure the museum's long-term financial independence," she explained.

To bring the campaign closer to the public, the museum has placed its own visitors at the center of its communication efforts. Participants in a public photo shoot became the faces of the campaign, while a video features visitors describing their personal connections to the institution and the role it plays in their lives.

The campaign is being promoted both online and throughout Frankfurt. Contributions can be made digitally through a dedicated German-language campaign page or directly at a donation station installed in the museum's foyer.

By featuring ordinary visitors rather than relying exclusively on prominent benefactors, the Städel is emphasizing the idea that its future belongs to the wider community and that contributions of different sizes can collectively strengthen the institution.

The initiative also draws attention to the museum's broad cultural responsibilities. Its collection spans more than 700 years of European art, bringing together major historical masterpieces alongside works that encourage new perspectives on art history.

Beyond its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, the Städel maintains extensive research, education, and public engagement programs. Its digital offerings extend access beyond the museum's physical galleries, reaching audiences of different ages and backgrounds.

The endowment campaign raises a broader question about how major cultural institutions can protect their missions over the long term while maintaining independence in an increasingly uncertain funding environment. Rather than directing its appeal toward an immediate acquisition or building project, the Städel is asking supporters to invest in the institution's ability to operate for generations to come.

For the museum, financial independence is closely connected to the freedom to make curatorial and educational decisions, preserve its collections, and remain accessible to the public.

The €100 million target represents a long-term capitalization goal rather than a fund intended to be spent. The museum has not announced a deadline for reaching that amount.

In returning to the philanthropic principles on which it was founded, the Städel is seeking to transform a historic legacy into a contemporary model of collective responsibility.

Its message is straightforward: the museum that Johann Friedrich Städel envisioned more than two centuries ago can remain independent if the community that values it continues to invest in its future.
