MADRID.- The Museo Nacional del Prado and the Embassy of Sweden in Madrid are marking the 400th anniversary of the birth of Queen Christina of Sweden with a wide-ranging program of exhibitions, concerts, talks, dance, educational activities and events exploring the queen’s enduring connections with art, science and intellectual freedom.

Running from October through December 2026, the program takes inspiration from Christina herself, a monarch remembered for defying convention and pursuing culture, learning and personal independence with unusual intensity for her time. The Prado is using the anniversary not only to revisit her historical legacy, but also to connect her interests with contemporary questions surrounding identity, women in science, creativity and cultural exchange.

A central part of the initiative will be the renewal of a sculpture gallery in the Prado’s permanent collection, bringing together important works once owned by Christina in Rome. The project forms part of the museum’s "El Prado en femenino" program, which examines the role women have played in shaping the institution and its collections. This year, the initiative also focuses on Mariana of Austria and Elisabeth Farnese, alongside Queen Christina.

The anniversary program will bring several prominent Swedish cultural figures to Madrid. On October 16, Swedish-Greek writer Theodor Kallifatides will join cultural journalist Xavi Ayén for a conversation titled "El viaje inverso. Cristina de Suecia y la búsqueda de una identidad propia." The discussion will consider the striking contrast between Christina’s journey from Protestant northern Europe toward the Mediterranean and Kallifatides’s own path from Greece to Sweden, while exploring themes of displacement, language, memory and self-determined identity.

On November 5, Swedish writer and cartoonist Liv Strömquist will take part in "La libertad de no encajar," a discussion centered on Christina’s refusal to accept many of the roles expected of women in the 17th century. The event will connect the queen’s decisions — including her rejection of marriage and her departure from Sweden — with contemporary debates around freedom, gender, education and the right to construct one’s own identity.

Science and technology will also play a significant role in the celebration. On November 20, astronauts Sara García Alonso, Christer Fuglesang and Jessica Meir will participate in a discussion titled "Exploradores de las estrellas: del espíritu visionario de Cristina de Suecia a l@s astronautas del siglo XXI." Linking Christina’s fascination with knowledge to present-day innovation, the conversation will range from artificial intelligence to space exploration.

That contemporary focus will also extend to younger audiences. Cristina Aranda and Ruth Falquina of MujeresTech will lead "Innovar como una reina," an artificial intelligence workshop aimed at secondary-school students. The program is designed to encourage creativity while bringing together technology, art and culture.

Music is another major thread running through the anniversary. Ana Alcaide will present "Essentia. Ecos de la reina Cristina" on October 2, performing on the nyckelharpa, the traditional Swedish keyed string instrument. The concert is conceived as a musical journey connecting the Sweden of Queen Christina with broader cultural landscapes.

The year will conclude with a Santa Lucia concert at the Prado on December 18. For the event, the Swedish women’s choir Damkören SALT will perform with the choir of the Orquesta Juvenil Europea de Madrid and the Orquesta Sinfónica Contemporánea de España, conducted by composer Juan Antonio Simarro. The concert will introduce audiences in Spain to the Swedish tradition of Saint Lucia, a celebration of light during the darkness of the Nordic winter.

Dance, accessibility and education are also part of the program. On November 14, the Sala de las Musas will host "Querida Cristina, …," an inclusive music and dance work directed by Mercedes Pacheco and performed by artists with and without disabilities.
The Prado will also offer an itinerary titled "Cristina de Suecia, pasión por la escultura," focusing on the queen’s role as a collector of sculpture and on works from her collection that are now preserved by the museum. Tactile visits will make sculptures from the collection accessible to blind and visually impaired visitors.

A separate lecture series will examine Christina’s artistic and political world in greater depth. Speakers include Tommaso Montanari on Christina and Bernini; David García Cueto on political strategies and artistic exchanges between Christina and Spain; Davide Lipari on sculpture at Christina’s court after Bernini; and Manuel Arias Martínez on antiquity and sculpture in the queen’s cultural universe.

The broader project, organized by the Embassy of Sweden in collaboration with the Museo Nacional del Prado, is supported by the Swedish Institute and Swedish Arts Council, along with a group of Swedish companies and organizations active in Spain.
Four centuries after her birth, the Prado’s program presents Christina of Sweden not simply as a historical monarch, but as a figure whose intellectual curiosity, independence and passion for art continue to resonate in the present.
