COLOGNE.- Zander Galerie announced the forthcoming publication On Kawara | Lewis Baltz, a two-volume edition dedicated to seminal early works of both artists: On Kawara's Today (196879) and I Met series are explored in one volume, the other centres on Lewis Baltz's The Tract Houses (196971) and The Prototype Works (196776).
Published by Zander Galerie in collaboration with Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König and edited by Thomas Zander, the edition comprises two autonomous volumes, each features an essay by Benjamin H. D. Buchloh.
In the late 1960s, On Kawara and Lewis Baltz developed, almost simultaneously, radical approaches that would come to transform Conceptual Art and photography respectivelyand, through them, our understanding of time and place.
On Kawara
The book brings together twelve 'Date Paintings' (1968-1979) from On Kawara's renowned Today series. The plates are complemented by reproductions of the paintings original archive boxes, each individually lined with newspaper clippings from the corresponding day. In concurrent entries from Kawara's work I Met, the artist recorded the names of the people he spoke with on each of these days. In this way, the book offers a concentrated look into a body of work that decisively shaped On Kawara's oeuvre and today ranks among the major positions in conceptual art.
Lewis Baltz
Born in Newport Beach, California, Lewis Baltz experienced the rapid industrial and suburban expansion in the American West. The book features his groundbreaking serial works of the late 1960s and early 1970s, The Tract Houses and The Prototype Works, which describe places that were created as epiphenomena of a post-industrial society. They broke with photographic traditions to explore structures of spatio-temporal processes in a reduced visual language. Baltz was instrumental in conceptual photography taking its place in contemporary art.
The two-volume publication in a slipcase is now available for pre-order through Buchhandlung Walther König.
