NEW YORK, NY.- The New Museum today announced the artist list for the 2027 New Museum Triennial: The Outside Expands on view February 4 through May 16, 2027. Founded in 2009, the New Museum Triennial is the only recurring international exhibition in New York City devoted to early-career artists from around the world. Now in its sixth iteration, the 2027 New Museum Triennial will feature 36 artists and collectives from 34 different countries—the widest international representation in a New Museum Triennial to date—and will be the first Triennial to take place within the newly opened OMA-designed expansion. The 2027 Triennial is co-curated by Vivian Crockett, Allen and Lola Goldring Curator at the New Museum, and Isabella Rjeille, Curator at MASP—Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, with Thalia Stefaniuk, Curatorial Assistant, and Taeyi Kim, Curatorial Fellow, marking the first iteration of the Triennial to be curated by an international team.

The 2027 Triennial’s title, The Outside Expands, takes partial inspiration from a July 1979 urban intervention by the Brazilian collective 3NÓS3 (3US3), X Galeria (X Gallery), in which the artists branded the entrances of several São Paulo galleries with duct-taped “X”s accompanied by a message: “O que está dentro fica, o que está fora se expande” (“What is inside remains, what is outside expands”). Taking place amidst the civil-military dictatorship in Brazil, the action invited artists and cultural workers to think beyond institutions during a period of extreme repression. In 2018, another phrase “O que não tem espaço está em todo lugar” (“What has no space is everywhere”) was cut out from a temporary museum wall in Rio de Janeiro by the artist and writer Jota Mombaça, leaving the traces of its extraction visible, reminiscent of a ruin. Mombaça later used the phrase as the title of a 2020–21 video project, developed before and during early phases of the Covid-19 pandemic, mapping rituals of care and connection and chronicling the global travel of a transgender, non-binary, and Black artist navigating daily and persistent experiences of systemic violence. These interrelated phrases and the actions they reflect affirm the expansive potential to move beyond defined institutional spaces, and by extension, beyond structural logics that aim to delineate and distinguish. The “X” also symbolizes a crossroad to allow critical reflection on the past and carves out a space for envisioning other futures. The Outside Expands turns towards artists that destabilize fixed notions of territory, identity, gender, and sexuality and who foster alternate ways of forging relationships, kinships, and collaborations.

The Outside Expands follows the previous installments of the New Museum Triennial, Younger Than Jesus (2009), The Ungovernables (2012), Surround Audience (2015), Songs for Sabotage (2018), and Soft Water Hard Stone (2021). This edition will present new and recent work by a majority of artists who are exhibiting in a US museum for the first time.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog co-published by the New Museum and Phaidon. Designed by Estúdio Campo, the catalog includes contributions from Vivian Crockett and Isabella Rjeille; Crockett and Rjeille in conversation with artist and founding member of 3NÓS3, Mario Ramiro; short essays on all 36 artists and collectives participating in the exhibition from prominent curators and thinkers; and original scholarship from Zoé Samudzi, Sara Nadal-Melsió, Johanna Hedva. A unique feature of the 2027 Triennial catalog is a series of 18 paired artist dialogues, providing a forum beyond the Museum galleries for the artists in the exhibition to explore the intersections, commonalities, and frictions present in their works, ideas, and practices.
