RIDGEWOOD, NY .- Apartment Gallery is presenting Two Currents, a two-person exhibition featuring new and recent paintings by Caetlynn Booth and Giordanne Salley. Grounded in their shared geography and the supportive artistic community of Ridgewood, Queens, the exhibition brings their distinct practices into direct conversation, exploring an experiential vision of water, memory, and time.

Curatorial Statement

Emanuel Swedenborg wrote, “Love, in its essence, is spiritual fire.”
For years, I have come to understand that making my work is how I love the world—a passionate, spiritual fire burning beneath the practice of synthesizing memories of color, place, and lucid dreams. In early 2025, seeking a deeper connection with artists in Ridgewood, the neighborhood I have called home since 2013, I stepped into Giordanne Salley’s studio. Light streamed through her windows, illuminating her canvases like stained glass in a cathedral. I immediately sensed a practice where deeply felt emotional and material processes were at work, with profound spiritual echoes in the finished paintings.

In the Venn diagram of our respective practices, the mandorla of intersection was striking. Both of us use painting not as shallow amusement, but as a committed pursuit of meaning—a search to reconcile internal emotional states and personal anecdotal experiences while inhabiting a female body. Central to this shared inquiry is the metaphorical state of water. Rooted in a mutual appreciation for the sensorial quality of water and swimming and observing the characteristics of water over time, we express those qualities in our work through doubling, reflection, and palette, exploring water as both a physical reality and a vessel for consciousness.

Caetlynn Booth, Sunrise Study VI, 2019. Oil on paper, mounted to panel, 17 x 13 inches framed (16 x 12 inches unframed).

This exhibition brings our paintings into conversation to explore an experiential vision of water—captured both through direct observation and across the passage of time. My own paintings originate from experiences observing consecutive sunrises over watery landscapes. Through thick impasto mark-making, the paint becomes a physical record of light transitioning from darkness into day, where water acts as a mirror reflecting an environment in flux. For me, landscape paintings can function as tapestries of recorded time, capturing the mesmerizing, impenetrable mystery of moments accumulated over a lifetime. Where my surface moves toward dense, tactile impasto, Giordanne constructs shifting tableaus through luminous, translucent layers. Her works flatten the horizon line to evoke the infinite, capturing the minute turbulence of waves diffracting forms into vibrating geometries. Her paintings slow down time, echoing Gaston Bachelard’s sentiment from Water and Dreams that “...to love an image is always to illustrate a love; to love an image is to find, without knowing it, a new metaphor for an old love.” This love is visible in the many layers of pentimenti in her canvases, where human and animal figures bathe in undulations, anchoring shifting patterns of memory, love, and loss to the continuous rhythm of the tides. While our methods diverge—my active, physical surfaces contrasting with her layered, palimpsest-like translucency—there is both harmony and a dissonant vibrational pleasure in placing our paintings side by side.

Grounded in our shared geography and the supportive visual arts community of Ridgewood, this pairing highlights two distinct artistic voices grappling with the same fundamental truth: that water, like time and selfhood, is never solid, but constantly pulsating with potential, transformation, and infinite depth. — Caetlynn Booth
