HONG KONG.- Opening the celebrations of Christies Wines and Spirits Departments 60th Anniversary this year, Christies presents The Cellar of the Hon. Henry Tang, a dedicated live auction taking place on 10 October 2026 at Christies Asia Pacific headquarters at The Henderson in Hong Kong. This landmark single-owner auction comes nearly six decades after Christies held its inaugural wine auction on 11 October 1966 in London, a pioneering moment that helped shape the modern fine wine auction market and laid the foundations for the worlds first standalone wine department. Six decades on, Christies continues to connect collectors across continents and generations, with the private collection of the Honourable Mr Henry Tang leading the anniversary celebrations in Hong Kong, with further anniversary sales in New York and London to be announced.
A distinguished wine collector and connoisseur, Mr Henry Tang has been cultivating his passion for fine wine for more than five decades, alongside a distinguished career in business and public service. He has also played an important role in advancing Hong Kongs position as a leading global wine hub and fostering a vibrant wine culture across the region. Driven by enduring curiosity and deep appreciation for wine, Mr Tang has travelled extensively through the worlds leading wine regions, constantly seeking new discoveries while forging close relationships with many of the industrys most respected producers. His collaboration with Christies spans more than a decade and includes the important 2013 auction of The Henry Tang Collection, the first single-owner wine collection from a prominent Asian collector to be offered by Christies.
Comprising over 800 lots, this sale reflects the breadth and depth of Mr Tangs collecting vision, spanning the worlds most celebrated wine regions and producers. Highlights range from the legendary domaines of Burgundy, including Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Henri Jayer, to the iconic estates of Bordeaux, including all the First Growths, Pétrus, Lafleur and Le Pin, and many more. Further enriched by distinguished selections from Champagne, Napa Valley, Spain, Italy and Australia, the collection offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire some of the worlds most coveted bottles, many of which have remained under single ownership and have been carefully cellared for decades, contributing to their outstanding condition and provenance.
Mr Henry Tang comments: After more than fifty years of collecting, there comes a moment to reflect on a cellar and recognise that wine has always been about sharing. This collection represents a lifetime of discovery, friendship, and admiration for the remarkable winemakers whose wines have brought me so much pleasure. As Christies celebrates the 60th Anniversary of its Wine Department and 40 years in Asia, I can think of no more fitting occasion to part with some treasured bottles. I sincerely hope these wines bring their new owners the same joy and inspiration they have brought me.
Adam Bilbey, Global Head of Wine and Spirits, Christies, says: Few individuals have done more to shape and elevate the culture of fine wine collecting in Asia than Henry Tang. Over a collecting journey spanning more than fifty years, he has built one of the worlds great wine collections, distinguished not only by its extraordinary quality and breadth, but also by the spirit in which it has been shared.
Widely admired for his generosity, Mr. Tang has been a mentor, advocate, and friend to countless collectors and members of the wine trade. This offering celebrates a lifetime of passion for wine and the relationships it has fostered. We are privileged to showcase a selection from this remarkable cellar and, as Christies celebrates the 60th Anniversary of its Wine Department, are honoured to mark this milestone with The Cellar of the Hon. Henry Tang.
