LONG ISLAND CITY, NY.- SculptureCenter announced the artists selected through our In Practice 2027 Open Call for Artist Proposals: Jianxin Tian, Thomas Tait, Anastasia Sosunova, Ash Moniz, Max Popov, and Jessica Wilson.

In Practice: Jianxin Tian
On View: Jan 27–Mar 8, 2027

Often combining mythological or whimsical motifs with elements of industrial design, Jianxin Tian hammers reliefs onto mass-produced metal objects, as if enchanting the mundane world. Tian presses and chisels sensual bodily forms onto domestic objects, continuing an initial motivation to draw out a poetics of kitchenware that formed during the pandemic lockdown. His practice, grounded in his training in Greco-Roman classical and modernist sculpture, is propelled by an urge to contend with the iconography of everyday life. For In Practice, Tian expands from household items to working with parts from large-scale industrial production, creating forms that diverge from the aesthetics of the assembly line.

In Practice: Thomas Tait
On View: Mar–Apr 2027

Immersed in the language of puppetry, Thomas Tait’s work borrows world-building methods from set design and kinetics thinking from performance. Often held in the fragile equilibrium of a complex system, Tait’s figurines are composed of found and organic materials. The visibility of the inner supporting structure and the unpredictability of their movement suggest an interiority to the figurines, inviting ontological speculation. For In Practice, Tait will develop a marionette pulley system organized around a central armature. By amplifying the friction within the installation, Tait’s DIY engineering explores whether a conscious "ghost" can arise from a structural apparatus.

In Practice: Anastasia Sosunova
On View: May–Jun 2027

Working between video, printmaking, and sculpture, Anastasia Sosunova shapes installations that draw upon shared rituals and mythologies that mobilize community thinking. Her projects address themes related to the coexistence of seemingly incompatible value systems. Over the last few years, she has centered in on the Lithuanian chain Senukai (a DIY retail empire), which leans into the vulnerabilities produced by a precarious national economy, marketing the ideal of self-sufficiency. Negotiating the romantic yet futile promises of hardware stores, Sosunova will build an environment that evokes both the anarchic logic of the hand-built and a moody Eastern European futurism for In Practice. The work emerges from the artist’s research into the contemporary shortage of homebuilding supplies, which has been intensified by the expansion of the defense industries across NATO countries.

In Practice: Ash Moniz
On View: Jul–Aug 2027

Ash Moniz is an artist whose work centers on the refusal to appear within artistic and political contexts that often desire personal representation, regardless of its costs. Her In Practice exhibition gives new form to a number of long-term artistic relationships and open-ended international projects made with subjects who cannot (or, for their own safety, choose not to) identify themselves due to their positions within conditions of war, precarious labor, and activism. The resulting works—in sculpture, installation, video, and text—document a compounding absence of representability within Moniz’s broader practice. Her attempt to describe and connect such voids through artworks reflects a tense negotiation of trust, agency, safety, and solidarity that underpins both artistic and political expression in this time.

In Practice: Max Popov
On View: Sep–Oct 2027

Max Popov reconstitutes obsolete and cast-aside materials, creating sculptures and installations that carry layered messages of both remembrance and the potential for renewal. Both elegiac and speculative, his work reveals how time accumulates as residue, and exposes the mutability of progress and permanence. For In Practice, Popov will create a new installation composed from the remnants of daily life—the material aftermath of objects after their value has been extracted or exhausted—and the impressions they leave behind.

In Practice: Jessica Wilson
On View: Nov–Dec 2027

Through animation, sculpture, and installation, Jessica Wilson explores the somatic and material effects of virtual systems—rendering unseen forces palpable through light, color, and spatial parameters. Her practice contends with the competing desires to index technical processes and to charge them with emotion, a tension that finds expression in physical sensation. For In Practice, she turns to disused LED taxi tops salvaged from New York City cabs, reviving the onboard advertisements from when she found them as ghostly echoes, while adding new animations that might expose the machine’s inner turmoil—a cartoonish live-feed MRI of processing and transmitting. The work embeds the taxi tops, normally used for targeted ads, with an imagined inner life, turning their components into protagonists of their own dramatic days.
