MADRID.- Long before theater became an evening at a playhouse, a Broadway production or a movie adapted for the stage, it was part ritual, part public spectacle and part political instrument. A new presentation at Madrid's National Archaeological Museum looks back at those beginnings, tracing how theater developed from religious celebrations in ancient Greece into one of the most enduring forms of entertainment in the Roman world.

Titled “From Greek Tragedy to Roman Comedy: Classical Theater,” the exhibition is the latest installment of the museum's Vitrina Cero program. Drawing on the MAN's bibliographic and archaeological holdings, the display explores not only how Greco-Roman theater developed, but why it mattered — as entertainment, as a way of communicating ideas and, at times, as a tool of political propaganda.

The story begins in ancient Greece around the 6th century B.C., with celebrations honoring Dionysus. Known as dithyrambs, these performances originally brought together a soloist and a chorus singing lyrical compositions dedicated to the god. Over time, a second performer was introduced. That seemingly simple change made dialogue possible and helped set the stage for theater as audiences would come to know it.

Tragedy became one of ancient Greece's defining theatrical forms. Stories drawn from mythology and legend placed characters in situations shaped by human conflict, moral choices and often unavoidable disaster. The exhibition highlights some of the tradition's most influential playwrights, including Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, whose works have continued to be performed, translated and reinterpreted for centuries.

When theater took root in Rome, it did so under the strong influence of the Greek tradition. Its early development is associated with Livius Andronicus, but Roman audiences developed a particularly strong appetite for comedy. Plays could make fun of prosperous social classes, entertain large crowds and also serve political purposes. Among the best-known Roman comic playwrights were Plautus and Terence.

The spread of Roman culture across the empire also carried theatrical traditions far beyond Rome itself. One surviving reminder is the Roman theater at Sagunto, Valencia, built around A.D. 50. The monument was declared a National Monument in 1896, and the MAN has timed its new presentation to coincide with the 130th anniversary of that designation.

The Sagunto connection gives the small exhibition a broader historical frame. Rather than treating ancient theater as something frozen in the distant past, the museum draws attention to traditions whose basic ingredients — drama, comedy, spectacle, social criticism and political messaging — remain familiar to contemporary audiences.

The exhibition also reflects the purpose of the MAN's Vitrina Cero, a program launched in 2017 and renewed every three months. The compact presentations are designed to bring rarely seen objects and lesser-known subjects into view, offering visitors new ways of approaching the museum's permanent collections.

Guided tours will accompany the exhibition, while the museum plans to share stories and curiosities related to classical theater through its social media channels each week.

“From Greek Tragedy to Roman Comedy: Classical Theater” is on view at the Museo Arqueológico Nacional in Madrid through October 18, 2026.
