From China to Carnegie Hall: Singer Zhen Yang Brings a Beloved Chinese Classic to New York
By Jose Villarreal

When Chinese singer Zhen Yang stepped onto the stage at Carnegie Hall, he chose a song that has been cherished by generations of Chinese listeners: “The Moon Represents My Heart”.

The familiar melody, known for its simplicity and emotional warmth, took on a new meaning inside one of New York’s most celebrated concert venues. For Yang, the performance was not only an opportunity to showcase his voice, but also another chance to introduce Chinese music to audiences far from home.

Yang performed at Carnegie Hall during the 4th New York Global Music Competition, where he received the First Prize Award in the Voice Category, Professional Division in January 2025.

The award marked an important milestone in Yang’s career, which has increasingly brought him from stages in China to audiences in New York.

For his Carnegie Hall appearance, Yang performed “The Moon Represents My Heart,” one of the best-known Mandarin love songs in Chinese popular music. With its understated melody and deeply emotional lyrics, the song has remained recognizable across generations and geographical borders.

For Yang, performing such a distinctly Chinese classic in New York carried significance beyond the competition itself.

Since coming to New York, Yang has frequently performed at concerts, community events and schools, using music as a way to create cultural exchange and introduce Chinese songs to people from different backgrounds.

Rather than limiting his performances to Chinese-speaking audiences, Yang has sought opportunities to bring the music into broader public spaces, where listeners may encounter Chinese culture for the first time through a melody rather than through language.

That approach has become an important part of his work in New York.

Music, Yang believes, has the ability to communicate even when an audience does not understand every word. The emotion of a song — its rhythm, tone and interpretation — can often cross linguistic boundaries more easily than conversation.

His performance at Carnegie Hall offered a particularly meaningful example of that idea.

In China, Yang had already accumulated years of professional performance experience, appearing in major concerts and television programs. His public career has included recognition as an outstanding contestant in a weekly competition of CCTV’s “Avenue of Stars” in 2020, as well as a performing arts honor connected to a CCTV Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day gala in 2023.

His previous professional background also includes appearances in large-scale performances and nationally televised programs in China.

But performing in New York has presented Yang with a different mission.
Here, his role is not simply that of a singer entertaining an audience. His performances frequently become small acts of cultural introduction — whether in a formal concert hall, at a community gathering or in a school setting.

At Carnegie Hall, that cultural connection was especially visible.

“The Moon Represents My Heart” is deeply familiar to many Chinese listeners, but for members of an international audience, the performance could serve as an introduction to a piece of Chinese musical memory.

The First Prize recognition added professional significance to the evening. According to Yang’s award certificate, he received first prize in the competition’s professional voice division in recognition of his commitment, talent and achievements in music.
Yet the Carnegie Hall performance was not an isolated moment.

Yang has continued to appear at cultural events throughout New York. He was also invited to perform at the 5th NYC AAPI Heritage Parade in Manhattan, where he brought Chinese songs to crowds gathered along Sixth Avenue.

The two settings could hardly be more different: one inside the elegant surroundings of Carnegie Hall, the other before a multicultural audience on the streets of Midtown Manhattan.

Together, however, they illustrate the same direction in Yang’s career.
Through concerts, community appearances and performances at schools, Yang has made cultural exchange an increasingly visible part of his musical life in New York. Each stage provides a different audience, but the purpose remains similar — allowing people to experience Chinese culture through music.

His Carnegie Hall performance stands out as one of the most significant moments in that journey.

For Yang, winning first prize was an important professional recognition. But singing “The Moon Represents My Heart” at Carnegie Hall also carried a broader symbolism: a song deeply rooted in Chinese cultural memory being heard on one of New York’s most internationally recognized musical stages.

In that moment, the distance between China and New York became a little smaller — one song at a time.
