MEMPHIS, TN.-The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art is pleased to announce the artists chosen for Perspectives, a juried exhibition of regional contemporary art which will be on view at the museum from June 22 through September 9, 2007. Selected artists are: Brandon Anschultz, St. Louis, MO, Bruce Burton, Belleville, IL, Patrick DeGuira, Nashville, TN, Jill Downen, St. Louis, MO, Jodi Hays, Nashville, TN, Barry Jones, Clarksville, TN, Terri Jones, Memphis, TN, Jon Lee, Memphis, TN, Phillip Lewis, Memphis, TN, Jacqueline Meeks, Murfreesboro, TN, Cedar Nordbye, Memphis, TN, Kit Reuther, Nashville, TN, Bo Rodda, Memphis, TN, Bill Rowe, State University, AR, Jack Dingo Ryan, Nashville, TN, Gregg Schlanger, Clarksville, TN, Niles Wallace, Memphis, TN, and John Watson, Saint Louis, MO.
Perspectives will provide an overview of contemporary art made within a 300-mile radius of Memphis. Works chosen for the exhibition demonstrate how regionalisms, which were once defined as peculiar characteristics of work produced outside of cultural centers, have become strategies for dealing with local and global issues embedded in a broad visual and philosophical exchange.
Michael Rooks, Associate Curator at The Contemporary Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii, and formerly Assistant Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, is juror for the exhibition. Rooks is also co-curator of Situation Comedy, a traveling exhibition circulated by ICI, and Dreaming of a Speech Without Words: The Paintings of H.C. Westermann, which is currently touring nationally.
Perspectives is presented by UBS Sponsored by The Hohenberg Foundation, Inc., and Carrier Corporation.
