CHICAGO, IL.- The Art Institute of Chicago opened Lee Miller: Fearless, on view August 29 through December 7, 2026. The exhibition is the first comprehensive survey of Miller’s photographs in more than 25 years, gathering approximately 150 works from across the major episodes of her singular career.

From the 1920s through the 1950s, Miller wore many hats: fashion model, Surrealist innovator, magazine photographer, business owner, international adventurer, and accredited battlefield correspondent. These remarkably varied interests shaped her approach to life and creativity, which is on full display in this expansive exhibition.

Born in New York, Miller moved to Paris at 20 years old, simultaneously seeking work in front of and behind the camera. She pioneered Surrealist techniques and took on daring subjects with a readiness that inspired experimental artists and fashion editors alike. She excelled at portraiture and pictured a range of cultural figures in the 1930s—from Charlie Chaplin to Pablo Picasso—most of them personal friends.

Unafraid of challenges, by age 30, Miller had run commercial studios on both sides of the Atlantic, become a haute couture icon and a cult cinema idol, and lived in Paris, New York, and Egypt. The time she spent in Egypt is a lesser known period in her career, and several of the works from that time are featured in the exhibition and have never been seen before.

Miller took up news photography in World War II, and she covered the war’s final battles and aftermath as a field reporter for Vogue. Miller traveled from France to Romania and spent a momentous two months in Germany just as the concentration camps were being liberated. Two rooms of the exhibition are given over to this chapter in Miller’s life, when she became a journalist and helped turn Vogue into an outlet for wartime and postwar news. The inhumanities Miller witnessed gave her fresh depth and strength of will but also left her with post-traumatic stress for many years thereafter.

Description of image

“Lee Miller was a complex figure, at once courageous and conflicted, plainspoken in her words yet with a flair for mystery in her art,” said Matthew Witkovsky, Richard and Ellen Sandor Chair and Curator, Photography and Media, and vice president for strategic art initiatives, the Art Institute of Chicago. “She excelled at collaboration but also forged paths entirely on her own. Her breakthroughs in fashion and Surrealism from around 1930; her frank, disturbing images from the camps at Buchenwald and Dachau in 1945; and her sensitive portraits of fellow artists throughout her multifaceted career, are all highlights of this exhibition.”

Following the war, Miller remade herself once more, gaining renown in England as a cook and gardener, while quietly continuing to lead an artistic life through to her death in 1977.

Lee Miller: Fearless is organized by the Art Institute of Chicago in collaboration with Tate Britain and Muse d’Art Moderne de Paris.
