Lomipo at Levontin 7: Shay Pinto and the Art of Refusing the Familiar

Writing about Shay Pinto leaves me with a certain dilemma: how to describe a songwriter whose work already seems to turn up everywhere without simply listing accomplishments. Pintos primary achievement is his ability to take basic pop songwriting and prove that one can wed it to indie rock, electronic textures, guitar music and contemporary production without losing the immediacy of a good song. That versatility has made Pinto one of the most consequential songwriters and producers working in Israeli pop today.

At Levontin 7 in Tel Aviv on September 19, 2025, Pinto brought that philosophy directly to the stage as lead singer, songwriter and electric guitarist of lomipo. The band headlined with a 70- minute performance comprising ten original songs and two covers, backed by Aviv Mor on lead guitar, Orian Rose on drums and Amit Minz on bass. Many of Pintos songs also reveal a carefully controlled approach to musical build-up.

They often begin with little more than a drum beat, establishing the rhythmic foundation before the bass line enters, followed by dreamy textures in a higher register. The melody then emerges over these gradually accumulating layers. It is a deceptively simple but highly effective pop structure: rather than presenting the full arrangement immediately, Pinto allows each musical element to enter separately, steadily increasing the songs harmonic, rhythmic and emotional weight. The result is a natural sense of anticipation and release that demonstrates both his instinct for accessible pop songwriting and his sophistication as an arranger.

The performance emphasized live musicianship: dynamic arrangements, vocal harmonies and guitar-driven instrumentation rather than simply recreating studio recordings. Pintos writing blurs major and minor centers and favors recurring melodic motifs that change as the arrangements develop. His guitar work is equally important. During Falling Out of Love, his playing stands out.

The extended solo became one of the sets defining moments, demonstrating how his role in lomipo extends beyond frontman into arranger, instrumentalist and architect of the bands sound. Several songs received extended applause, and the audience remained gathered directly in front of the stage throughout the set. That matters at Levontin 7. For nearly two decades the venue has occupied a central position in Israels adventurous indie culture; The Jerusalem Post wrote that it had done more than any other venue in the country to provide the indie audience with quality rock, pop and jazz. Pintos headline appearance therefore functioned as more than another date on a crowded calendar: it became an anchor moment for lomipos presence within the Tel Aviv independent-music community. The significance of the evening was heightened by the fact that this was not Pintos first appearance at Levontin 7. His return represented the return of a proven draw: an artist brought back to the venue after previously demonstrating his ability to connect with its audience. For an independent venue whose programming depends on identifying performers capable of sustaining audience interest, inviting an artist back signals confidence in the continuity of that success. In this sense, the September 19 headline performance was not simply another booking on Levontin 7s calendar, but a strategically important return engagement built on Pintos established relationship with the venue and its audience.

Pinto has been proving for years that pop musicians do not have to stay stuck in a familiar rut. His songwriting credits include Merguis All Is See Through, which reached No. 3 on an Israeli radio chart, and Shay Gabsos Red Heart, which reached No. 7; he was also nominated by GLGLZ for Song of the Year for What About Me. His work has appeared on Israeli MTV and national television, while All Is See Through was performed in more than 100 Festigal shows before a cumulative audience exceeding 200,000. Then there is the breadth of the rsum: Mergui, Ania Bukstein, Ivri Lider, Nadav Guedj, Shay Gabso, Haim Israel and others. Few Israeli songwriters of Pintos generation can point to such sustained work across recording, performance, national broadcasting and major artists.

Looking at the Israeli music scene, Pintos work also closely reflects Levontin 7s artistic identity. His combination of sophisticated songwriting, experimental harmony, guitar-driven arrangements and accessible pop places lomipo squarely within the adventurous independent music that the venue has long championed. By presenting Pinto and his original music, Levontin 7 reinforced its established role as a home for innovative Israeli artists who expand the boundaries of contemporary popular music.

The Levontin 7 concert made the reason clear. Pinto does not merely write songs; he understands how songs can grow and change when placed in the hands of a live band. He has developed from songwriter into a commanding creative figure whose influence is already deeply embedded in contemporary Israeli popular music.
