DORSET.- Visitors have just weeks left to experience The Tank Museum's popular Warhorse to Horsepower exhibition before it closes on 31 August 2026. The exhibition explores the vital role horses played during the First World War and the transition to mechanised warfare.

Warhorse to Horsepower first opened in 2014 to mark the anniversary of the start of the First World War. Since opening, over a million visitors have explored the essential role horses played during the war, with stories brought to life through a series of horse sculptures that guide visitors through the exhibition.

Highlights include the Hornsby Tractor, the Museum's oldest vehicle. This pioneering steam-powered tracked vehicle from the early 1900s was trialled by the War Office and helped demonstrate the potential of tracked technology for military use.

Exhibitions Manager, Luke Clark, said: “Our Warhorse exhibition has proven popular amongst families and history fans over the last 12 years. Through pictures, vehicles, and family-friendly tableaux, visitors have been able to learn about this vital era in the development of mechanised armour.





“The last day to visit Warhorse to Horsepower will be on 31 August 2026. Work on our new exhibition, Age of Experimentation, will begin at the start of September. This new exhibition explores one of the most innovative and transformative periods in armoured warfare through hands-on STEM engagement, rare vehicles and immersive stories.”

Age of Experimentation will open in January 2027 and focuses on the years 1919–1939, a time when the future of the tank was anything but certain. Tanks had proven their worth on the battlefields of the First World War, but with the widespread belief that trench warfare was a thing of the past, military leaders were forced to reconsider the role of armoured vehicles.

Luke continued: “The interwar period saw the creation of some of the most unusual vehicles ever built. Here at The Tank Museum, we are uniquely positioned to tell this story through our collection of prototype and one-of-a-kind vehicles.”
