Academy of Art University Bets on Artists to Lead the AI Era, Not Just Adapt to It

San Francisco's Academy of Art University has spent the last two years building one of the more aggressive AI curricula in art education: more than a dozen AI-focused courses, a dedicated Chief AI Evangelist, and a graduate marketing and design program whose enrollment has grown more than fivefold since launch. Now the school is adding a capstone: a Master of Fine Arts in AI-Driven Creative Practice, aimed less at teaching students to use AI tools and more at training them to build businesses around them.

The 60-unit program, open for enrollment starting Summer 2026, extends the university's Master of Arts in AI Marketing & Design, sharing that program's first 36 units before moving into a thesis sequence built around research, prototyping, and venture creation. Students won't leave with a portfolio alone: they'll leave with what the university calls a "pitch-ready concept," a project designed to function as a product, service, or new business rather than a classroom exercise.

It's a notable pivot in tone for art-school AI training, which has largely focused on ethics and technique: how to prompt responsibly, how to cite AI-assisted work, how to avoid letting a generator finish what an artist should. The new MFA keeps that foundation but adds entrepreneurship to the mix, treating AI fluency as a launchpad for founders rather than just a skill for hire.

Growth That Outpaced Expectations

The numbers behind the new degree suggest the demand was already there. The MA in AI Marketing & Design launched in Spring 2025 with just 10 students; by Fall 2026, enrollment had grown to 54, more than a fivefold increase in roughly a year and a half. That trajectory mirrors broader labor-market signals: creative agencies have rapidly adopted generative AI tools, and a majority of hiring managers in creative fields now say they're reluctant to bring on candidates without AI skills.

University leadership frames the new MFA as a response to that shift rather than a hedge against it. "Artificial intelligence is transforming every creative industry, but technology alone has never driven great ideas. People do," said Chris Visslailli, President of Academy of Art University, in the program's launch announcement. Doug Van Praet, Executive Director of the Schools of Brand Communications, described the degree's distinguishing feature as its endpoint: students "aren't simply refining a portfolio. They're developing original ideas with real-world potential."

Academy of Art University's Bigger AI Bet

The MFA arrives alongside a broader institutional buildout. In 2025, the university named advertising educator Ross Patrick as its first Chief AI Evangelist, a role built to guide AI integration across academic programs; Patrick has since developed foundational courses including AI for Advertising, AI for Designers, and AI for Everyone that now anchor the graduate curriculum. This July, the university created a second AI-focused leadership post, Director of AI Strategy, to oversee an institution-wide AI roadmap covering teaching, faculty support, and operations.

The university's AI push has also drawn outside recognition. Fred McHale, Executive Director of the School of Interaction & UI/UX Design, was recently selected for a roughly 100-person cohort of Anthropic Community Leaders chosen from more than 90,000 applicants, one of only five people in the group representing design and creative fields. McHale is expected to lead Anthropic-supported events in San Francisco focused on the intersection of design and AI.

Underlying all of it is a philosophy the university has repeated across its AI programming for two years now: that generative tools are additive to artistic training, not a substitute for it. Faculty routinely describe AI as functioning like any other studio tool, a paintbrush, a pair of scissors, useful only in the hands of someone who already has an artist's eye and a clear point of view. The new MFA extends that logic one step further, betting that the same trained instincts that make someone a strong designer can also make them a credible founder in an AI-saturated creative economy.

Academy of Art University now offers more than 129 accredited degree programs across 70 areas of study, and the AI-Driven Creative Practice MFA is structured as a three-year pathway, available both online and on campus.
