VIENNA.- Dorotheum has celebrated the most successful spring season in its history. With world records, outstanding international results and a series of highly successful auctions, Dorotheum has further strengthened its position as the leading auction house in Central Europe.
The Old Masters auction in April attracted worldwide attention with a depiction of Mary Magdalene by the renowned Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Although the head and a part of the saints shoulder had been cut from the canvas and lost over the course of history, the painting far exceeded expectations, achieving an outstanding 837,500.

Modern and Contemporary Art proved especially popular with collectors. The 520,000 achieved for a work by the Italian artist Carla Accardi established a new world auction record. Works by leading female artists such as Martha Jungwirth and Miriam Cahn also attracted strong international interest. Top prices were further achieved for works on paper by Claude Monet (Waterloo Bridge, 611,000) and Egon Schiele (Seated Girl with Red Hat, 474,500), as well as for a bronze sculpture by Marino Marini (565,000).
A rare 18.695-carat Kashmir sapphire, set around 1880 in a brooch by the Viennese manufacturer Rozet & Fischmeister, achieved 779,000 during Dorotheums most successful jewellery auction to date. This represents the highest auction price ever recorded for a piece of jewellery in Austria and Germany. Another landmark price was set by a pocket watch by Thomas Engel, which sold for 1.025 million, the highest ever achieved for a watch at auction in Austria.
Thanks to its broad range of offerings and its strong expertise in online auctions, Dorotheum successfully appealed to both domestic and international clients. Collectors and bidders from more than 90 countries participated in the auctions.
