Ayrton Senna's 1992 race-winning helmet heads to BUDDS motorsport auction
Rare 1992 Senna helmet expected to fetch over £80,000 at July auction.

TOWCESTER .- The helmet Ayrton Senna wore for the British, German and Hungarian Grands Prix during the 1992 Formula One World Championship will be up for sale next month, as part of a major auction devoted to motorsport memorabilia.

In addition, the boots and gloves the driver wore in his final season are also up for sale, valued at £15,000 - £18,000 and £18,000 - £20,000 respectively.

The exceptional race-used and race winning Shoei Formula One helmet was worn by 3-time World Champion Ayrton Senna during the 1992 Formula One World Championship, including the 1992 Hungarian Grand Prix where Senna claimed victory.

During the German Grand Prix, Senna was challenged by a young and ambitious Michael Schumacher. A hair-raising moment of wheel-to-wheel contact saw Senna seek out Schumacher after the race and famously argue with him. It was also the only time in F1 history where Senna, Schumacher and Mansell shared a podium together.

Andrew Moyers, Head of Motorsport at BUDDS, said: “Few Formula One drivers are as instantly recognisable as Ayrton Senna. He's a legend of the sport and three-time Formula One World Champion whose influence still shapes the sport.

“There’s so much F1 fans love about this item. There’s Senna’s iconic status, and the importance of the races he wore it for, including the 1992 Hungarian Grand Prix where Senna claimed victory.

In F1 today, drivers often use multiple helmets in every race, but back in the 90s, it was normal that a single helmet would be used for several races during one season. The helmet has been verified by experts and multiple photo matching as worn for the British, German and Hungarian Grands Prix. In line with rules in both Britain and Germany at the time, tobacco sponsor branding has been obscured on the helmet, ready for TV.

Alongside the Senna helmet, his British rival Nigel Mansell has consigned a collection to the Auction worth in excess of £40,000. Items include a helmet and gloves believed to have been worn in the 1987 Brazilian Grand Prix (valued at £20,000 - £30,000), a signed set of Williams branded golf clubs (valued at £600 - £800) and a signed Williams replica race suit (valued at £1,000 - £1,500).

“It’s rare to have so many high value collectors’ items in one sale - timed perfectly with the British Grand Prix,” continued Moyers. “This is the first time the ‘92 Senna helmet has come up for auction, and while we are estimating the value at £80,000 - £120,000, based on recent similar sales, it could go for much higher.”

“Mansell and Senna were rivals, but they also had huge respect for each other, and we've had bids already from collectors all over the world.”

The BUDDS Motorsport Icons Auction at Silverstone Museum in July will take place at the Silverstone Museum on the 7th July 2026 at 12 pm.
