WELLINGBOROUGH.- The largest collection of World Cup memorabilia ever offered at auction will go under the hammer this month, bringing together artefacts from some of the most iconic moments in football history.
Pele's 1958 World Cup winner's medal, the shirt worn by Gordon Banks during his legendary Save of the Century against Pele in 1970, and Peter Shilton's jersey from Maradona's infamous Hand of God goal in 1986 are among more than 450 lots in a landmark sale expected to reach more than £2 million in total sales.
Believed to be the biggest World Cup memorabilia auction ever staged, the sale offers an unprecedented opportunity to see items linked to football's greatest triumphs, controversies and defining moments assembled in a single collection.
Alongside artefacts connected to Brazil's greatest player and one of football's most enduring rivalries, the auction also features memorabilia from England's 1966 World Cup victory, including Gordon Banks' winners' medal and Alan Ball's shirt from the final.
Highlights include:
Pele's 1958 World Cup winner's medal (£300,000-£500,000)
Alan Ball's shirt from England's 1966 World Cup final victory £150,000-£200,000
Peter Shilton's shirt from England's 1986 World Cup quarter-final against Argentina, featuring Maradona's Hand of God goal (£200,000-£300,000)
Gordon Banks' shirt from his famous save against Pele in the 1970 World Cup (£200,000-£300,000)
Gordon Banks' 1966 World Cup winner's medal (£220,000-£300,000)
The auction, organised by sports memorabilia specialists BUDDS, will culminate in a live sale on 25 June at the company's Wellingborough auction rooms. It will be accompanied by an online auction running from 1st-21st June featuring shirts from all 48 nations competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
David Convery, Head of Sporting Memorabilia at BUDDS, said: "This is the largest collection of World Cup memorabilia ever offered at auction, and it is difficult to imagine many sales that could rival it in terms of historical significance.
"Individual items such as Pele's World Cup winner's medal, Gordon Banks' shirt from the Save of the Century or Peter Shilton's jersey from the Hand of God match would normally be headline attractions on their own. To see them all appearing in a single sale is extraordinarily rare.
"These are pieces of football history connected to moments that millions of people feel emotionally attached to, even if they werent born at the time - whether thats the euphoria of 1966 or the agony of the Hand of God goal. We're already seeing strong interest from collectors in the UK and around the world. Opportunities to acquire objects of this calibre and historical importance dont come along very often."
The sale spans almost seven decades of World Cup history and offers collectors a unique opportunity to own a direct link to the tournament's most celebrated and talked-about moments.
