Christie's New York Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale totals $102.8 million Highest sale total in seven years

NEW YORK, NY.- Christie's New York continued its phenomenal series of sales with the final live auction of 20/21 Spring Marquee Week, the Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale achieving remarkable results for a Day Sale, with a total of more than $100 million—achieving a final results of $102,854,700, --the sale's highest total since 2019 – selling 93% by lot and 96% by value. Throughout the entirety, the sale experience lively bidding on the phones, online and live in the Rockefeller Center saleroom, and brought the week's running total to $1,449,655,356. Marquee Week Sales conclude tomorrow, with two online sales: Picasso Ceramics and Breaking Ground: The Private Collection of Marian Goodman Part I, closing Friday, May 22.

The top lot of the day was an untitled painting by Joan Mitchell from 1965, which realized $5,382,000, followed by the second highest price for Endangered Species a set of screenprints by Andy Warhol that sold for $4,467,000. The third highest lot came for a work by Josef Albers, Homage to the Square: Golden which far surpassed expectation to realize $3,552,000—more than five times its low estimate—and establishing a new record for the renowned artist.

From the first lot this morning to the final lot in the evening—nearly nine hours later—we saw enduring excitement for great art from start to finish. Today was a testament to both the tireless spirit of our team at Christie's as well as the vibrancy of the contemporary art market.”

The afternoon session of the auction began with a dedicated single-owner grouping works by George Condo from the collection of Anna Condo. The group was 100% sold and far surpassed expectations to achieve, $8,187,690, more than doubling its low estimate. The top lot of the group was a monumental canvas that achieved $1,651,000, more than three times its low estimate.

We were privileged to have a sale filled with quality works of exceptional provenance, foregrounded by incredible collections—among them, the collection of Anna Condo. It was a pleasure to collaborate with Anna Condo in putting this selection of works together, offering a cohesive look at George Condo's artwork from the late 90s through the early 2010s. This was a strong grouping, emblematic of many important themes and motifs of Condo's practice, and we were thrilled to see the market's response.”

The sale featured additional esteemed collections, two of which headlined Evening Sales the previous night: the private collections of Marian Goodman and Hank McNeil—both 100% sold. Combined with the property sold Tuesday, and Wednesday, the McNeil collection achieved a final total of $29,810,390. Offerings from the Goodman collection have achieved $81,656,005 to-date, with sales ongoing through tomorrow.
