AMSTERDAM.- Yellow. Beyond Van Gogh’s Colour attracted 461,337 visitors, making it the most visited exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum in the past ten years. The exhibition allowed visitors to see Vincent van Gogh and the colour so closely associated with his work in a new, sensory way.

Emilie Gordenker, Director of the Van Gogh Museum: ‘The exhibition Yellow allowed our visitors to look at Van Gogh from a fresh perspective, through the colour that is strongly associated with him. We are absolutely delighted that nearly half a million people enjoyed this exhibition, which demonstrated that yellow is much more than Van Gogh’s favourite colour: it struck a deep emotional chord amongst artists and intellectuals of his own time, and seems to have done the same for our many visitors.’

Visitors to Yellow. Beyond Van Gogh’s Colour appreciated the sensory approach, in which art, scent, music, and stories come together. Their reactions to the overall experience of the exhibition were glowing:

‘The combination of scent, music, and beautiful paintings was amazing. A fantastic exhibition that truly touches you.’

‘I found the Yellow exhibition inspiring and surprising. It was interesting to experience art in such a sensory way.’

‘The audio tour was a wonderful addition to the overall experience. The exhibition really made me think and stayed with me for a long time.’

Taking Vincent van Gogh’s iconic Sunflowers (1889) as a point of departure, Yellow. Beyond Van Gogh’s Colour showed how, around 1900, the colour became a powerful means of expressing emotions, ideas and ideals – from warmth and energy to modernity, rebellion and spirituality.
