LONDON.- The Wernher collection, a major art collection bought with the proceeds of South African diamonds and gold, is to go on permanent display in London on from June 19. More than 650 works of art collected by Victorian millionaire Sir Julius Wernher (1850-1912) have found a home at Ranger's House in Greenwich, south London, English Heritage has announced. In 2001 English Heritage secured a 125-year loan of the collection. The collection includes rare Old Master paintings by Hans Memling and Gabriel Metsu, as well as the largest private collection of renaissance jewelry in the UK. There are also delicately carved mediareview, Byzantine and renaissance ivories, Limoges enamels, Sevres porcelain, 18th century French tapestries and French furniture, and renaissance bronzes. English paintings in the collection include portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds, John Hoppner and John Singer Sargent.
