Hammer high in Hong Kong: Christie's Evening Sale soars to HK$655.7 million
Rare Sanyu Horse soars to HK$63.9 million and doubles low estimate.

HONG KONG.- On 27 March 2026, Christie's Hong Kong 20th/21st Century Evening Sale achieved a total of HK$655,761,600 / US$83,802,193, marking a 17% increase on the Evening Sale total achieved in March 2025. The results continue the market momentum and confidence seen at Christie's globally. The sale, which comprised an outstanding and varied selection of artistry, garnered exceptional results and was 100% sold by lot, with a hammer price 117% above the low estimate. With the art world gathering in the city, the saleroom was packed and the gallery space at The Henderson was busy throughout, a fitting start to celebrations for Christie's 40th anniversary in Asia this year.

The Evening Sale's leading lots and the four world auction records achieved spanned Asian and Western art. Gerhard Richter's Abstraktes Bild led the sale at HK$92,100,000 / US$11,769,799, alongside Sanyu's Cheval agenouillé sur un tapis, (Kneeling Horse on Carpet) which realised HK$63,940,000 / US$8,171,128 after heated competition on multiple telephones. Walter Spies' Balinese landscape Blick Von Der Höhe (A View From the Heights) realised HK$59,060,000 / US$7,547,495, breaking the artist's world auction record.

For the first time, an Old Master painting was included in the Hong Kong Evening Sale – a still-life by 17th Century Dutch artist Johannes Goedaert broke the artist's world auction record when it sold for HK$10,160,000 / US$1,298,384, as Christie's expands the market and introduces new categories to the region. The 20th/21st Century Sales continue with the Day Sales on Saturday 28 March.

Cristian Albu, Deputy Chairman, Head of 20th/21st Century Art, Christie's Asia Pacific commented: “The incredible results achieved tonight reflect the quality of works selected for this sale. We saw great energy, deep bidding, and witnessed solid momentum in the market. The diversity of our offering highlights the ever-expanding tastes of the region. Collectors responded passionately to Chinese Modern masters, the breadth of Western art, Southeast Asian, Japanese, and Korean works, as well as the first Old Master in our Evening Sale.”
