WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA.- All About Photo is presenting Civilization by Damien Aubin, winner of the March Solo Exhibition.

Photographer Damien Aubin presents Civilization, a compelling body of work exploring environments shaped by human ambition and constructed at a scale that surpasses individual presence. Through large- scale architectural and industrial landscapes, Aubin examines how monumental systems persist — whether fully operational, meticulously maintained, or marked by abandonment.

Rather than documenting decay, Civilization investigates the endurance of structure itself. Aubin’s images focus on environments where human activity has receded, yet the architectural framework remains intact, imposing its internal order and systemic logic. In these spaces, function may falter or withdraw, but form continues to assert its authority.

The photographs deliberately minimize human presence, allowing massive, organized structures to dominate the frame. This shift in perspective reveals a subtle tension: a misalignment between monumental scale and lived experience, between operational systems and the tangible reality of the body. Within apparent coherence, a quiet form of destabilization emerges.

Aubin approaches these sites from a measured distance, both physically and conceptually. The act of photographing becomes a way of confronting the simultaneous attraction and unease these environments evoke. Beauty and rigidity coexist. Precision and inertia overlap.

What remains in Civilization is not ruin as spectacle, but persistence as condition. The series reflects on what endures when purpose becomes uncertain — on the quiet inertia of structures that outlast immediate human necessity. Civilization, Aubin suggests, does not disappear when activity ceases; it lingers as framework, as imprint, as system.

Through rigorous composition and restrained visual language, Civilization invites viewers to consider the lasting presence of built environments and the evolving relationship between scale, function, and human experience.

A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts, Damien Aubin develops a photographic language at the intersection of architectural study and sociological reflection. His process is rooted in rigorous technical standards, primarily utilizing the 4x5 large format camera and medium format digital systems.

This choice of equipment dictates a specific relationship with time—a deliberate slowness that allows him to deconstruct the complexity of the structures he observes. By using a large format camera, he doesn’t merely capture an image; he constructs a perspective where geometric precision dialogues with the silence of space. His work questions the individual’s place. within monumental systems, seeking in every frame the fragile balance between built ambition and the inertia of the urban landscape...
