MONTEREY, CA.- The Monterey Museum of Art presents Artists at Continents End: The Monterey Peninsula Art Colony, 1875-1907, on view through April 29, 2007. This spring, the Museum will host the widely acclaimed exhibition, Artists at Continents End: The Monterey Peninsula Arts Colony, 1875-1907. Organized by the Crocker Art Museum, this groundbreaking exhibition reappraises the artistic legacy of Californias Monterey Peninsula. The first in-depth examination of the rise of our regional art style, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view masterpieces of Early California painting. The presentation highlights works by some of the most widely recognized early artists in California, including the founding fathers of the Northern California artistic community such as Jules Tavernier and William Keith. Tonalist masterpieces by the wife and husband team of Arthur and Lucia Matthews as well as the works of their celebrated students, including Xavier Martinez and Gottardo Piazzoni are prominently featured. The abstracted seascapes of Francis McComas as well as the pointillist adobes of Evelyn McCormick will also be on display, alongside significant nocturnes by Charles Rollo Peters. In addition to painterly works, the exhibition also includes the scenic photographs of Arnold Genthe, which document the life and pursuits of the artists in their coastal retreat.
