PARIS.- Laurence des Cars has resigned from her role as President-Director of the Louvre Museum, submitting her decision to the President of the French Republic with immediate effect, the museum confirmed.

Des Cars informed Louvre staff directly, describing her leadership of the world’s most visited museum as “the honor of my professional life.” She noted that throughout her tenure she devoted her full energy and determination to the institution and its mission.

During nearly five years at the helm, Des Cars oversaw a range of initiatives aimed at modernizing and transforming the museum. In her message to employees, she praised the dedication of Louvre staff, emphasizing that reforms and projects were only possible through the collective efforts of what she called the “Louvre collective,” whose professionalism and passion sustain the museum’s daily operations.

She also referenced the October 19, 2025 theft at the museum, calling it a stark reminder of the institution’s vulnerability despite its global stature and extraordinary collections. The incident, she suggested, reinforced longstanding concerns she had raised about the challenges of protecting and maintaining such a vast and symbolically important national institution.

Des Cars indicated that uncertainty surrounding the museum’s future direction and resources played a key role in her decision. She stressed that transforming the Louvre requires clear shared objectives and sufficient means to meet its ambitions. Without that clarity and support, she said, it had become difficult to effectively lead the changes the institution needs, particularly at a time when maintaining the status quo is not an option.

“In these circumstances, I believe I am no longer able to fully exercise the responsibilities entrusted to me,” she wrote, expressing hope that her departure would allow the momentum she sought to build over the past years to continue under new leadership.

As she prepared to leave, Des Cars thanked museum staff for their support, trust, and ongoing commitment, reaffirming her deep attachment to the Louvre and its mission.

Her resignation marks a significant leadership transition for the iconic French museum, which faces ongoing challenges related to security, modernization, visitor management, and long-term strategic development. No immediate announcement has yet been made regarding her successor.
