BORÅS.- Borås has now marked an important milestone in its cultural landscape with the inauguration of its first permanent sound artwork. On December 4, Currents Cast in Time: Collected Sounds of Borås by sound artist and musician Jin Mustafa was officially unveiled in Viskan Park, beside Hallbergsbron in Stadsparken. Mustafa was present at the opening and spoke about both the work itself and her wider artistic practice, making the occasion a shared moment of listening and reflection for those in attendance.

The installation is a site-specific work that brings together sculpture and sound. At its core are field recordings gathered across Borås, particularly along the river Viskan, which Mustafa transformed through digital processing into a layered sound composition. These sounds are paired with a sculptural form made of aluminum and fiberglass, designed as a place to sit and rest. Visitors are encouraged to pause, take a seat, and listen closely—turning an everyday park setting into a space for attentive, immersive listening.

Originally commissioned for the Borås Art Biennial 2021, Currents Cast in Time has now been reworked and given a permanent home in Viskan Park. Its new placement is part of the broader Viskan Park project and was realized in close collaboration with the city’s Parks Unit and Technical Services Department. With this permanent installation, the work becomes part of the city’s daily rhythm, offering an alternative soundscape shaped by Borås’s past, present, and possible futures.

Jin Mustafa, born in 1988 in Uppsala and educated at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, works across sound, sculpture, moving image, and installation. Her practice often explores the boundaries between personal and collective memory, as well as the interplay between real and imagined spaces—concerns that resonate clearly in this new public work.

The inauguration formed part of Borås’s ongoing commitment to public art, overseen by the Cultural Committee through Borås Art Museum. Over the years, works from the Borås Art Biennial have become lasting features of the city’s public environment, helping to build a distinctive and internationally recognized collection. With the permanent installation of Currents Cast in Time: Collected Sounds of Borås, Borås adds sound art to that legacy, expanding how art can be experienced in the city’s shared spaces.
