MOCA announces 30th anniversary release of Catherine Opie's Dyke Deck
MOCA and Catherine Opie commemorate 30 years of Dyke Deck with limited-edition releases and collector’s poster.

LOS ANGELES, CA.- Catherine Opie’s original Dyke Deck, released in 1995 and produced by MOCA, featured highly stylized portraits of the artist’s queer community—both friends and strangers (the latter cast during an open call in San Francisco). On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Dyke Deck, Opie and MOCA announce the release of Dyke Deck: Thirtieth Anniversary Edition and the brand-new Dyke Deck: Reshuffle Edition on Monday, November 1, 2025. Along with these new editions, the first edition of the Double Dyke Deck box set and a poster featuring an “uncut” Dyke Deck of cards will be available for purchase at MOCA Store locations at MOCA Grand Avenue and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA and online at mocastore.org.

Dyke Deck includes 52 cards, two jokers, an instruction sheet, and case. Opie explores representations of the lesbian body in the deck’s photography, organizing the images into four thematic categories, each corresponding to one of the four suits: Couples are Hearts, Jocks are Clubs, Femmes are Diamonds, and Butches are Spades.

For over thirty years, Opie has captured often overlooked aspects of contemporary American life and culture.

One of the most important photographers of her generation, her photographic subjects have included early seminal portraits of the LGBTQ+ community, the architecture of Los Angeles' freeway system, mansions in Beverly Hills, Midwestern icehouses, high school football players, California surfers, abstract landscapes of National Parks, and the Bel-Air residence of Elizabeth Taylor, among others. In 2018 Opie debuted her first film, The Modernist, a dystopic view of Los Angeles, a city that has figured prominently in her work over the years. Her complex and diverse body of work is political, personal, and highly aesthetic – the formal, conceptual, and documentary are always at play.

To celebrate the launch of Dyke Deck, MOCA presents Lesbian Poker Night with Catherine Opie on Friday, November 21, 2025 at WAREHOUSE at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA. Lesbian Poker Night is hosted by Adriene Jenik and Catherine Opie with special guest poker dealers and Claudette Sexy DJ. Attendees are invited to take a seat at the table with professional and special guest dealers to try their luck at poker and special “Poke- Her” game variations created by Adriene Jenik. This event is made possible due to the generous underwriting support of MOCA Board Chair Emeritus Maria Seferian.

A portion of every deck sale will be donated to the the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Audre Lorde Health Program.
