BROOKINGS SD.- The South Dakota Museum of Art presents the exhibit Mick Sheldon through April 15, 2007. Mick is an artist, humorist, satirist, and teacher. Born in the 1950s in Reno Nevada, Mick received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nevada and went on to get an Master of Fine Arts from California State University-Sacramento and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California-Davis. Mick currently makes his home in Yolo, Colorado, and teaches art at Sierra College and American River College.
He has carved and printed over 275 wood, linoleum, and plastic block prints. Though he has worked with all of the traditional media and produced a number of multiple-color block prints, he primarily makes hand-colored woodblock prints from birch ply, rag paper, oil-based ink, and watercolors. The blocks are carved with small hand gouges that require constant sharpening, and carving requires forty to sixty hours to complete. His woodblock prints incorporate highly dramatic color, cascading diagonals, swirling black outlines, and dark humor to activate, provoke, and draw in viewers. sHis vibrant, edgy art has been exhibited nationwide.
