Boris Grigoriev (Russian, 1886-1939), Portrait of Gladys Roosevelt Dick, circa 1922. Oil on canvas.

LONDON.- Heritage Auctions is presenting a special exhibition featuring four remarkable works that bridge the twilight of Imperial Russia and the dawn of its artistic diaspora. On view in Heritages Mayfair gallery from October 27 to November 1, 2025, the exhibition showcases Boris Grigorievs three rediscovered paintingsToilers of the Field, Portrait of Mrs. Fairman Dick, and Portrait of an Actress (Lydia Koreneva)alongside Konstantin Makovskys Portrait of Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia.
Together, these works chart a vivid dialogue between empire and exile, tradition and modernity. Makovskys restrained Imperial portrait captures a moment of fading grandeur at the turn of the century, while Grigorievs modernist portrayals, executed in the wake of revolution, reveal the transformation of Russian art in exile and its engagement with the cultural ferment of 1920s New York.
Highlights include:
Boris Grigorievs Toilers of the Field (circa 1920), a major rediscovery from his seminal Raseya series, unseen publicly since 1929.
Portraits from Grigorievs New York period, including depictions of gallerist Gladys Roosevelt Dick and actress Lydia Koreneva works that illuminate his deep ties with the early modernist art world of interwar America.
Konstantin Makovskys Portrait of Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich (circa 1900), a compelling imperial commission once held at the Vladimir Palace and is now part of the collection of A La Vieille Russie, New York, a selection from which will be offered by Heritage.
The exhibition features these works from Heritages December 2025 auctions of Russian Works of Art:
Imperial Porcelain & Russian Works of Art from the Collection of A La Vieille Russie December 16 (Sale 8261)
Imperial Fabergé & Russian Works of Art December 17 (Sale 8232)
Heritage is honored to present these works to collectors in London. They represent a dialogue between tradition and modernity, empire and exile, says Nick Nicholson, Heritages Director of Russian Works of Art. These paintings invite us to re-examine a period of extraordinary transformation in Russian culture and its continuing global resonance.
