LONDON.- On Thursday 6th November a unique collaboration of leading UK and EU auctioneers will bring the art world and the auction community together in support of three underrepresented charities. These charities work across a spectrum of needs, from pioneering research and early diagnosis to palliative care for children and families living with life-limiting conditions, with the aim of raising £100,000.
The Gavel Auction, presented by Bidpath in partnership with Wild in Art, will feature a series of 15 artist-designed gavels, each transformed into a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Inspired by the journey of one their colleagues, George Wade, who received the life changing news of a double brain tumour diagnosis in April 2024, Bidpath was deeply moved by his courage and resilience, which inspired the entire team. In his honour, Bidpath has launched The Gavel Auction, a charitable initiative dedicated to supporting charities that make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals facing lifes most challenging circumstances.
The gavel, an enduring symbol in the auctioneering world, was chosen as the inspiration for the sculptures due to its historical significance. Live auctions trace back to ancient Greece and Rome, evolving over centuries from informal gatherings to highly organised events led by professional auctioneers. By the 17th century, the gavel was used to capture attention, maintain order, and signal the acceptance of the highest bid, a practice that became prominent with auction houses such as Christies and Sothebys. Today, while technology and online platforms have transformed the way auctions operate, the gavel continues to represent tradition and the excitement of live auctions, making it the perfect emblem for this project.
The works have been displayed on an art trail across the UK, from Aberdeen to London, and will be available for viewing until 31st October. David Brindley, CEO of Bidpath, said: The initiative highlights the power of the auction community to make a difference beyond the saleroom. By combining creativity, craftsmanship, and the spirit of giving, the participating auctioneers aim to raise meaningful contributions for causes that have a lasting impact. We were deeply touched by how many people involved in this project have been affected by brain tumours, either personally or through friends and family. It has made the project feel even more meaningful, and support from the community to bid on lots on the night is vital. Auctioneers have always been at the heart of their communities, and this project celebrates that role, uniting our industry behind a shared purpose.
Each gavel is H60cm x W100cm x D45cm and weighs approximately 10kg. Bidders will have the opportunity to take home a piece of art that also carries a powerful story of generosity and collaboration.
All proceeds go to charity, supporting The Brain Tumour Charity, The National Brain Appeal, and ICPCN. Donate via the JustGiving page: https://www.justgiving.com/team/bidpath-foundation-gavel-art-trail-auction.
