LOS ANGELES, CA.- Michael Brand, director of the J. Paul Getty Museum, today announced the appointment of David Bomford as Associate Director for Collections. Bomford is currently Senior Restorer of Paintings at the National Gallery in London. He will begin his new job at the Getty Museum on April 23, 2007.
“It is a wonderful development for the Getty Museum to have someone of David’s caliber in this critical position,” said Brand. “He brings a stellar international reputation as both a conservator and highly innovative scholar along with his considerable experience in museum management to the task of caring for, studying, and developing the Getty’s collections.”
Bomford has been at the National Gallery since 1968, and has played major roles in the restoration of such paintings as Rembrandt’s Ecce Homo and van Gogh’s Sunflowers. In addition to his duties as Senior Restorer, Bomford has served as Head of the Registrar’s and Art Handling Departments and as conservator in charge of international loan exhibitions.
In 2005 he was a visiting scholar at the Getty Museum, and is the author of numerous books and articles on conservation and art history. He has also served as Slade Professor of Fine Art at the University of Oxford, visiting professor at both the Churubusco National Institute of Conservation in Mexico City and the Vitae Foundation and Art Museum of Sao Paolo, editor of the international journal Studies in Conservation, and Secretary-General of the International Institute for Conservation. His groundbreaking series of five “Art in the Making” exhibitions staged at the National Gallery in London between 1998 and 2004 have received worldwide acclaim.
Bomford will supervise six curatorial and four conservation departments and the registrar’s office at the Getty Museum. Primary areas of responsibility include collections development, care, and installation. “With David’s assistance, I look forward to working with our highly professional staff to continue developing the Museum as a uniquely creative cultural institution,” said Brand.
