Dunhuang Art and Therapeutic Art Practice

In the context of contemporary art, Huang Dongling delves deeply into the fusion of the thousand-year-old Dunhuang art and contemporary art, exploring the continuation of intangible cultural heritage in the present era. On the other hand, with a "healing" touch therapeutic brushstrokes and perspective, she explores sustainable development and contemporary women's issues, bringing therapeutic art practices into contemporary society.

The integration of Dunhuang art and contemporary art

Huang Dongling's "Flying Apsaras of Dunhuang" creates a modern image of the flying apsaras that have been evolving for a thousand years. The flying apsaras in her work have graceful postures and a dynamic twisting sense of movement, as if they are dancing lightly to the music, showcasing a modern sense of rhythm and beauty. The lines of the flying apsaras in Huang Dongling's paintings are smooth and lively, capturing the rhythm and tempo of their dance and presenting them from a modern artistic perspective. The flying apsaras in the picture are ethereal and colorful, light and agile, yet no longer distant religious symbols. The graceful flying apsaras all represent freedom and transcendence, unrestrained and free. Without wings, they soar freely in the sky, their bodies light and their postures diverse. The flying apsaras are the embodiment of freedom, a spiritual world of freedom.

In "Dunhuang Music and Dance", Huang Dongling showcases her research on the music and dance themes in Dunhuang murals. The picture features a wide variety of musical instruments, from sheng to waist drums, clappers, and various types of flutes. It presents the rich and profound diversity of Dunhuang musical instruments to the audience, demonstrating the rich and colorful Dunhuang musical instrument art and the grandeur of music and dance art through modern free expression. Dunhuang dance is rich in variety, but Huang Dongling re-creates the famous "Hu Teng Dance" in a contemporary artistic expression. The lines have a flowing feel, with appropriate density and uniform thickness, capable of expressing subtle movements, like flowing clouds and water. In the middle of the picture, two dancers are surrounded by long scarves, with their heads held high, performing rapid spinning movements like lightning, vividly demonstrating that this is a dance characterized by rapid rotation. Here, traditional elements are activated with a contemporary visual art perspective, representing a re-creation of contemporary aesthetics.

Huang Dongling's "Dunhuang Lotus Ceiling Pattern" is a re-creation of Dunhuang patterns and designs. Her re-creation of Dunhuang motifs perfectly blends tradition and modernity. In the design, Huang Dongling skillfully incorporates the rich elements of Dunhuang murals into modern aesthetics. In terms of color, she uses the classic color combinations of Dunhuang murals to create a visual effect that is both ancient and modern. In composition, Huang Dongling pays attention to the symmetry and balance of the patterns while also integrating movement and change, making it both traditional and modern in its dynamism. The work "Dunhuang Lotus Ceiling Pattern" is surrounded by a large lotus flower around the lotus heart, with the heart presenting a five-color Dharma wheel shape. The petals in the center are composed of lotus seeds, waves, elephant flowers, and lotus flowers. Outside are flying apsaras flying in the clouds, and further out are two layers of pearl beads, scroll grass patterns, hanging foot patterns, and curtains. The lotus flowers in the four corners contrast with the center, leaving room for imagination. The overall color is dazzling and colorful. Around the central lotus, on an ochre background, four flying apsaras with flowing robes and holding flowers are depicted, dancing lightly in the blue sky, with flowing clouds around them. The patterns are outlined with fine and smooth white or deep yellow lines, with a delicate and meticulous yet lively and elegant expression. Flying apsaras are scattering flowers and playing music around the ceiling, creating a strong sense of movement. In these totem patterns, there are many "flower" images, which play an important role in the overall aesthetic and content display of the picture, serving as an important part of the background or decorative patterns, highlighting the unique artistic charm of Dunhuang murals. It is a fusion of Dunhuang art and contemporary art.

Contemporary Exploration of Intangible Cultural Heritage:
"Intangible Cultural Heritage - Shu Embroidery" recreates the charm of traditional craftsmanship with meticulous strokes. The core of Shu embroidery lies in the ultimate craftsmanship, patience, and delicate expression of the beauty of life. Behind every stitch lies the warmth of time. This dedication to "slow work yields fine results" is particularly precious in today's fast-paced society, evoking people's respect and yearning for craftsmanship and concentration, and resonating emotionally with modern people.

Meanwhile, Huang Dongling's "Intangible Cultural Heritage - Li Ethnic Plant Dyeing" pays tribute to 15 Li ethnic intangible cultural heritage artisans with contemporary visual language. Invited by the exhibition organizer, she collaborated with Li ethnic intangible cultural heritage artisans to explore the modern display of intangible cultural heritage, integrating traditional Li ethnic plant dyeing techniques into the contemporary design context and presenting the charm of Li ethnic plant dyeing through contemporary visual language patterns. The "Natural Gowns - Wuzhishan Maodao Plant Dyeing & Rattan Weaving Clothing Art Show" was held at the Hainan Provincial Cultural Center. This form of collaboration between artists and traditional intangible cultural heritage artisans is a successful contemporary display of intangible cultural heritage innovation, allowing more people to experience the charm of intangible cultural heritage. Accompanied by 15 Li ethnic intangible cultural heritage inheritors, they made their debut together, allowing the 15 Li ethnic intangible cultural heritage artisans to "fly" out of Wuzhishan. Models wearing clothing that combines Li ethnic plant dyeing and rattan weaving elements made a stunning appearance. These internationalized clothing are the crystallization of the skills and efforts of rural workers, artisans, and artists, carrying the rural workers' aspirations for rural revitalization, the artisans' dedication to traditional techniques, and their pursuit of beauty. They showcase the collision between tradition and modernity, as well as the harmonious coexistence of nature and humanity. It is a successful innovation in the contemporary exploration of intangible cultural heritage.

The contemporary practice of therapeutic art (in hospital institutions):

Huang Dongling's "Thyroid Emotion Regulation - Don't Be Angry" visualizes the butterfly-shaped thyroid gland, conveying that the thyroid, as an emotional organ, is closely related to the mental state of modern people. With the high pressure of modern life and irregular work and rest schedules, stress often cannot be relieved. Huang Dongling uses therapeutic brushstrokes to convey to modern people the importance of maintaining a good mood and paying attention to thyroid health. In the picture, the butterfly-like organ on the girl's neck is the thyroid gland. A calm heart means that the thyroid will be as beautiful as a butterfly. The butterflies flying in the picture also convey this message. The butterfly-shaped thyroid gland is personified, and a good mindset helps maintain thyroid health. The animals hugging each other in the picture convey to modern people that they should be kind to themselves, pay more attention to their emotions, and not be angry. Emphasizing the importance of proper emotional regulation. The ginkgo leaves in the background represent beauty and tenacity. The overall picture is dominated by green tones, also representing a healthy mindset. It conveys to modern people that only by learning to love themselves can the thyroid be more beautiful. The work was exhibited in a cross-border exhibition at Ruijin Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, exploring the contemporary practice of therapeutic art. Through the cooperation between therapeutic art and hospitals, more diseases can be popularized among modern people, and the public can be taught how to prevent diseases. This form of cooperation is a successful case of the contemporary practice of therapeutic art. It makes up for the shortcomings of verbal preaching. Verbal preaching about more diseases may make people uncomfortable, and people usually find it hard to accept and may develop resistance. However, through therapeutic art exhibitions, modern people are invited to actively interpret and reflect. This sense of participation can transform the passive mindset of "being educated" into the active cognition of "I have realized it". This practice is a successful case of the contemporary practice of therapeutic art. Through therapeutic art exhibitions and visual art, modern people are made aware that emotions are closely related to thyroid health, and they are encouraged to actively pay attention to their emotional problems to prevent thyroid diseases.

Therapeutic Art in Sustainability

Huang Dongling's "Guarding the Panda Paradise" uses a healing touch therapeutic brushstrokes to focus on sustainable development.

(Introduction to the artwork "Guarding the Panda Paradise": Human destruction of the natural environment has led to a continuous decline in the number of many wild animals. These precious creatures are facing unprecedented challenges. Threats such as habitat destruction, illegal hunting, and environmental pollution loom like a dark cloud over their survival. This painting reflects the protection and importance of endangered animals through the depiction of pandas. A girl embracing a habitat in the picture represents the harmonious coexistence of humans and animals. Humans should pay attention and take action to protect the environment and the habitats of these animals. The pandas in the picture and their comfortable and relaxed postures, happily playing, represent the peace of mind about the environment. The picture stretches the sense of space from far to near, also representing the vastness and peace of the environment. It is hoped that people will pay attention to and protect the habitats of all endangered species.)

Huang Dongling's "Wuyuan River" uses a healing touch therapeutic brushstrokes to focus on sustainable development.

(Introduction to the artwork "Wuyuan River": The "Wuyuan River" work uses a healing touch therapeutic brushstrokes to call on people to protect the ecological balance of the Wuyuan River wetland. The main color of the picture is green, echoing ecological protection. Many creatures are leisurely active in the Wuyuan River wetland, highlighting the importance of protecting the ecological balance of the Wuyuan River wetland. In the center of the picture, a Li ethnic girl is sitting freely on a lotus leaf playing with water, representing the harmonious coexistence of the Wuyuan River villagers and the Wuyuan River wetland. The dynamic beauty of the many creatures in the wetland is vividly presented, complementing the static beauty of the plants, enjoying the life activities brought by the Wuyuan River wetland.)

Reflections and Connections on Women's Issues in Therapeutic Art

"Endless Life" focuses on the irreversible pain that women's bodies endure during childbirth.

(Introduction to "Endless Life": Throughout history, giving birth is an experience that almost every woman has to go through and cannot avoid. However, the harm it causes to women is also immense. The uterus, which is the first to suffer, can expand from the size of an egg to dozens of times its original size. It uses its extraordinary ability to nurture the growth of new life, but the damage to the uterus is also extremely severe. It is like a deflated balloon that is large and wrinkled, and it is difficult to restore to its original size and elasticity. The entire picture uses an abstract and concrete form to express the pain of the uterus caused by childbirth from a female perspective. The main color of the picture is red, with a pregnant woman as the carrier. The uterus is combined with the orchid, which are similar in shape. In ancient times, the orchid was often used to symbolize the uterus. Here, the orchid grows out of the uterus, representing the vitality of women and their desire to find a sense of freedom from the pain of childbirth. The chains on the uterus represent the shackles of childbirth, the shackles of society, and the lack of freedom brought by childbirth. The burden that the uterus bears. Many women inevitably need to take various drugs to protect the fetus during pregnancy. The syringes in the picture also symbolize the burden on the uterus. A little girl is holding a flower in the picture, and the nectar in the flower slowly flows into the uterus, representing the nutrients and protection needed by women during the pregnancy process. The red lines beside the picture represent stretch marks, the skin that has been stretched to the limit. The child being nurtured and the surrounding cells also symbolize the greatness of women's pregnancy and the burden that the uterus bears. It is the greatness of women's childbirth that enables the human race to continue. )

Huang Dongling's "Blue Depression" conveys the anxiety of modern women about their appearance and age through therapeutic brushstrokes. It conveys the anxiety of modern women about being judged by others' eyes. The bird flying on the face in the picture is shaped like a pimple, expressing the imperfection on the face. It conveys to modern people that women are too strict with their appearance. The hands holding the makeup tools, the hand holding the lipstick and the hand holding the brush, convey to modern people the excessive demands on women's appearance in modern society, such as "must wear makeup when going out", "if only my cheekbones were higher", "my lipstick has come off", "I'm already 27.8 years old", etc. The anxiety about appearance and age. The girl's face is wearing a similar mask, representing that as a woman, one must always present a glamorous and beautiful image. Some torn feelings are depicted in the picture, representing the girl's desire to firmly hold onto this mask. The many eyes on the mask above represent various self-perceived imperfect eye shapes. The overall picture describes the anxiety and pain of women in society regarding their appearance and age. The girl trapped in the hourglass and the capsule in the lower right corner background, along with the numbers of age and the pills to maintain youth, all indicate that contemporary women are bound by their age and are anxious. The many boys and girls holding mirrors also symbolize that wherever women go, there are many judgments and self-anxieties. It conveys to modern people that the anxiety of women about their appearance and age is caused by the eyes of modern people.
