LONDON.- MacDougalls announces the upcoming École de Paris & Other Masters sale on Drouot.com. The online auction is now open for bidding until 24th April 2025. The sale features 150 lots of paintings, works on paper, objects and icons from distinguished private collections.
Leading the sale is a superb Sorcière Tho de Cao Bang, Haut-Tonkin, 1933, by A. Iacovleff (Lot 8, 400,000-600,000 GBP). This monumental work was painted by the artist upon his return from the Citroën expedition in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Far East in 1931-1932. Exhibited during the artists lifetime at Galerie Charpentier in 1933, the work was previously in the collection of his sister, the opera singer Alexandra Iacovleff, and Victor Tanguy, a renowned French general and a major collector of Iacovleff oeuvre.
Another important offering is Toys by S. Sudeikin (Lot 6,120,000-180,000 GBP). The present work incorporates the Sudeikins favourite subject, and this painting is rightly considered to be one of the best works by the artist from the early 1920s. The artist loved to depict traditional Russian moulded clay figurines, particularly handcrafted Dymkovo toys, which were distinguished by their bright colours and dramatic black contour.
This spring MacDougalls is honoured to showcase rare works from an esteemed European collection. Among its highlights is a captivating vista Leningrad Landscape. Moika. Sun, 1939, by R. Falk (Lot 11, 120,000-180,000 GBP), which was included in Falks solo exhibition at the Central House of the Arts in Moscow in 1939. The painting captures the view of the Red Bridge over the Moika River and was previously in the possession of the legendary collector L.B. Katsenelson.
Another highlight is La Garde-Freinet, 1931, by V. Shukhaev (Lot 12, 60,000-90,000 GBP) from the artists sojourn in France. This beautifully interpreted landscape, which is both romantic and strikingly realistic, depicts the view of a medieval French mountain village not far from Saint-Tropez. The work has impeccable provenance, having previously been in the collection of Nikolai Okunev (1885-1949), a famous art historian and scholar, and featured in the early exhibition of Shukhaev works organised in Prague in 1935.
Also from the same collection comes View of a Port in Leningrad by V. Rozhdestvenski (Lot 13, 35,000-50,000 GBP), an early work by B. Anisfeld Harbour in Capri (Lot 17, 20,000-30,000 GBP) inspired by the artists brief stay on the island in 1911, Roses in a Basket with a Seascape by G. Lapchine (Lot 18, 8,000-12,000 GBP) and a rare collection of works by X. Krohn (Lots 14-16 and 19-22). The artist, originally from Norway, established himself as an important part of the Russian avant-garde movement in the early 20th century and participated in the Bubnovyi Valet exhibitions.
École de Paris and Other Masters also offers important works by leading artists G. Annenkov, L. Survage, N. Goncharova, Ph. Maliavin, A. Lanskoy, O. Rabin, E. Bulatov, M. Brussilovsky, N. Nesterova.
